Without going into details I took the Sensenish ground adjustable composite prop off the 912uls today, that is a stall accident did it, and the prop is in pieces, at least the pieces we could find in the grass.
What to do? Tear down the engine and gear box?
Roger Lee, Sir, could you make a recommendation? What kind of turn around time would a person be looking at for this, and what would you guess the probably outcome on the crank shaft would be, that is, OK, or junk after the strike at full power.

Howdy John,
Really sorry to hear about your incident. If it is any consolation at all just think you weren't the first and you won't be the last. It has happened to thousands and will happen again. I had, many years ago, my own little mishap and bent a gear leg on a tail dragger. It is definitely a live and learn world.
So with that said onward.
Was the prop at idle when it hit or WOT? A full power strike really needs some attention and some props are better at less energy transfer than others. A wood prop will induce less energy than a Warp Drive prop. If you get right on it you may be down for 2 weeks.
You need the Rotax Heavy maint. manual and it tells you how to do this. It isn't real hard. More time consuming. Here it is in a nutshell.
You need to do a runout check on the prop flange. Pull the prop and you will need to put a dial indicator on the prop flange and check for run out. Then you do need to pull the gearbox and do the inspection listed in the maint. manual on the gearbox. You will be better off sending this in to a Rotax center, like CPS or one of the others. When the gearbox is off you need to do another runout check on the crank shaft with the small gear on it. Again you will need a dial caliper set up to check this. If the crank isn't bent and just to put your mind at ease most aren't then you just have the gearbox tear down and inspection. You might as well replace the Bellville washers in the gearbox since you have it off. They, plus the shims, are responsible for the amount of friction torque that you test during 100 hr or annual inspections. They will have to remove the gearbox shaft bearing and check the shaft runout. They will have to replace the bearing. This process may be around $500-$600, but when you get your gearbox back it will be good as new.
p.s.
How many hours on the engine?
Call Jeremy at CPS 510-357-2403. He can give you a good handle on pricing and times.
I hope this helped some.

Time on the engine was zero...brand new unit, run perhaps one half hour doing carb balancing, and general checking. The prop hit at full power.
Thanks for the information.

Hi John,
Was it just the tips of the prop or all the way down to the hub? What type of prop was it?

Sensenich ground adjustable hollow composite. One blade broke off right at
the spinner, and the other one broke off about 10-inches away from the
spinner. Some folks searched the accident area...grass along the taxi and
runway but found nothing.....either the prop broke into bits or was thrown a
long way away, which is what I think.
Spinner completely undamaged..not a scratch. Clamping pieces and a
cone-shape 'cup' that limits blade rotation when settin the angle were all
OK.
No external physical damage to any engine component..even the gascolator
located at the bottom of the firewall escaped injury..lower cowl is trash as
is the nose gear, leg fork to the nose wheel, and the gear leg that broke
where it was welded to a piece that allowed bolting it to the underside of
the fuselage.
Prop replacement is simply a bolting exercise and a dent in the check book.
John

Hi John,
Sounds like the engine and gearbox may be ok, but you really need to do the checks listed above and in the manual. Definitely follow the manual on the prop strike checks. It is the only way to be sure. The nice thing about some composites is they are so light and a hollow comb core is they come apart easy and will save the gearbox.
