|
|
Does anyone know what resin was used to make up the fiberglass fuel tanks?
Mine was built in 1991, and has one 6 gallon left tank and a13 gallon right
tank. I would like to fix/repair/mangle the right tank. Are they made from
epoxy or polyester resin? They're brown in color, but that may be the cloth.
The resin looks to be very clear.
Thanks,
Bradley

Really!? I was under the impression that you had to repair with the original
material.
I thought it was polyester, but wanted to make sure. I can get either one,
just wanted to know which one.
Why do you recommend epoxy?

Michel's right. Even if the original tanks were polyester, (they were
probably vinylester, similar,) you should do modifications with epoxy.
Beyond the obvious handling benefits, polyester offers a really poor
mechanical bond, which is all that's available now that everything's cured.
The only way you would use polyester would be to make a completely separate
part and bond it to the original with acrylic or epoxy adhesive. Then you'd
be fine. Otherwise, if you want to bond directly to the original polyester
part you should use some epoxy with good adhesive properties.

I used "West Systems Epoxy" when I ripped up and modified my tanks. It
adheres good to other glass products. However, I'm not so sure about it's
release of toxic stuff. I developed a sensitivity to epoxy during my
process and almost had to go to the hospital. My face will blow up and turn
round if I even get near mixed epoxy anymore. Once you are sensitized, you
are sensitized for life. I recommend full face mask with external air and
all exposed skin covered when working with epoxy. I used West Systems for
years with no effects then one day, boom it was over.
