My fuselage kit is ready for collection from the factory (at last!) and I was planning to hire a van to go and get it. However, I’m not sure if it will fit any van that is readily available for hire. Karen at the factory reckoned that the fuselage is around 16 feet long, which would be just a bit too long for a long-wheelbase Transit-type van. Does anyone have any recommendations for suitable vehicles?

Many thanks

Rick

Ah Rick...brings back memories...in my case to rendevouz w/ 3 other builders to unload a container.
A pick up truck worked for me,
Good luck...and Happy Building!

Ahhh yes....the good ol days of kit collection. Wouldn't it be nice to go back to that time? ........NOT!

I rented a large moving van for the journey. I can't remember its exact length, somewhere around 30 feet?

Hi Rick,

I bet you are excited!

The factory always used to suggest using a long wheelbase 'Sprinter' van. I believe the fin didn't quite fit in but you could tie the rear doors closed around it.

Hope that helps.

Phil

Rick, A Europa trailer is ideal, if you have the wherewithal to tow it.
Where are you located? Regards, David Joyce, G-XSDJ, (in Gloucestershire)

Hi! Rick.
I had a 7.5 tonne gross Box van (it has a tacho but you don’t need an HGV licence. ) Take plenty of ropes to lash it all down inside but not too tight or you’ll cut into the parts. Where are you based?

Rick, you can (sort of) get it in a transit- see the photo!
But as Bob said, a 7.5 Tonne box van (with a tail lift) is just perfect - about £100/day.
Take a friend and lots of straps and carpet or blankets for lashing it down.

Cheers,

Bill & Sue

Rick,
Years ago I was able to bring my fuselage kit home in a long wheelbase van. However I removed the LH passenger seat before starting (It was designed for easy removal). I had the tail hard up against the dashboard and the rear doors not quite closed and tied together with rope. The boxed parts went behind the driver's seat. Gear changing was a little difficult as I remember.

I just realized how this statement could be misconstrued as a downer, and figured adding a point or two. Gathering up the project was an extremely exciting time -almost magical, and like the build, an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life. It is definately an irreplaceable moment, and signified the starting of a new chapter in my life, representing a new sweet(hard fought) reward to obtain. The comment was meant to be a spoof on reliving the good 'ol days...then realizing that it would require starting the build all over again. Well, that would be ok for plane #2, but first things first.. Cheers to all! Greg F

Rick-

I have made some modifications to my sailboat trailer and use it for both the fuselage and the wings. For as far as you are going, a boat trailer might be a good, inexpensive, solution if you can borrow one.

Many thanks for all the replies on this – especially those with pictures as it gives me a much better idea than just the measurements. I will go and check out the hire companies next week and see the vans in the flesh. I’m only coming up from Cambridge, so it’s a relatively easy run up the A1, so I think I may get away with a Sprinter or LWB Luton

Thanks again

Rick
