was thinking of a way to rate the efficiency of flying to driving, and
gave it a stab.
The trip is X59, (Valkaria FL) to OSH.
The numbers may not be totally accurate, and some assumptions made.
By car:
DIST 1412 miles
SPD 62 MPH
MPG 30
GPH 2
TIME 22.75 Hours
(from MapQuest)
By RV-10
DIST 1034 Miles
SPD 175 MPH
GPH 10
TIME 5.9 Hours
The 'formula' is DISTANCE/(TIME * GPH)
The 'efficiency' then is 25.86 by car and 17.52 by RV-10.
What's surprising to me is the 'time * GPH' (gallons for the
trip)..... which is 54.6 for the car, and only 59 for the RV10.
Any comments???

I'm no expert with only 22 hrs on the meter, but 10 GPH seems very low to me? More like 14 per hr.

Nah, my AVERAGE fuel burn for an entire flight is usually
around 10gph, if I take total hours and total gallons.
When you run LOP, you'll have fuel burns into the 7's
with probably 11.5 or so being the HIGH end of fuel flows.
Switch it to ROP flying and you're right...14 or so is a
good number. I burn 13.5-15 usually when ROP.
I flight plan 160kts and 14gph. In reality, I end up
usually a tad bit faster, and can plan on 10-10.5gph
for most any flight, as long as I can get up above
7 or 8000'. If I'm stuck "under the weather", then I
have to revert to the 14gph planned number.
That's why I find it nice to have fuel price info on board
when I fly, using Voyager....my flight plans always show
me at destinations reachable with 14gph flows, but I
typically can do much better, so if I've been cruising
for 3 hours LOP, I may need to search for a better
fuel stop that clears me from whatever weather is around,
and is reachable at my real burn rate. I could pre-plan
multiple options, but I find in the real world, your
weather diversions may make some plans not work out
anyway, if you're staying VFR.

Thanks for the data point .... You've got 22 hours on me!!! And that's
only 175 MPH. More data points needed!

I flew nonstop from X35 (north central FL) to KRHI (north WI) just before the show. I was a 16,000 ft burning 9.5 gph just rich of peak (headwinds most of the trip, so I needed some speed), getting about 165 ktas. I burned 71 gals on the 1,090 nm trip in 7:08. It was a great flight and very economical. You can check out the trip log on flight aware for N256H. You can actually get more efficiency if you lean it past peak. I have seen fuel flows of under 8 gph in high altitude cruise before, although it's best to do that, IMHO, when you have winds at your back.

Jesse,
You must carry more than 60 gallons of fuel.
