Hello all
long time lurker very seldom poster (nothing usually to post usually here trying to learn as much as I can from the long time kolb pilots on the list) .Last weekend I finally got a few bits of video shot and I thought as I have seen lots of clips from the USA I thought some of you may like to see a little bit of England. The flight was from Ince Blundell airfield just outside liverpool and if anyone is interested (and if I got it right ) 53 32 06 17 N 3 01 53 39 W on google earth should point you to my trailer /hanger ( The centre trailer of the three shown there ) and although it was not my best landing ever I would still like any comments

Very nice Eddie. What a treat, just got in from an evening flight to go see a buddy I haven't seen in over 25 years, came back and made a 5 minute chocolate cake to celebrate and found the link to your videos. Looks like Kolb country to me.

Eddie,
enjoyed your videos.
What sort of compass is that and how is it attached to the windscreen?. It looks a bit heavy to be just stuck on and I baulk at drilling holes in the Lexan.

Hi Pat / all on list
To be honest I dont know the make of the compass ( I will check later when I go down to the field) I think it is for a boat and has a hole underneath for mounting on a strut of some sort .It was on the aircraft when I bought it, but, held on with velcro in its current position. It was usually on the floor before lift off because of bouncing along the rough ( ish ) runways so I did drill the lexan and used a Brass screw and nut to hold it in place but through another piece of lexan about 1 " square outside the screen to spread the load away from the drilled hole . if you look again you can just make out the corner of the extra lexan slightly darker as it was from the original tinted ( and badly scratched and cracked screen ) So far have had no problems with this mounting ( after around 45 hrs ) and no signs of cracking or strain around the mounting hole, and it went through some pretty firm arrivals when I was teaching myself how to get the kolb back on the floor. Probably helps that although it looks substantial the compass casing is only plastic and so not actually very heavy . I have never checked to any degree how accurate the compass is apart from making sure that it shows as near as makes no difference the same heading as the runway when taking off and landing . The type of flying I do does not really need an accurate compass ( probably not at all ) . I am a lorry ( Truck ) driver and spend all week away from home and do approx 1800 to 2000 miles a week so at the weekend just getting airborne and floating around the local area is the way I unwind. The last thing I want to do is sit in something for hours on end travelling to and from somewhere again.
Thanks for the nice comments to all and when possible I will try another video and maybe add some music or titles when I can work out how its done

Thanks for the videos, Eddie. Always nice to see where others are flying. The Irish Sea looked a lot calmer than our Lake Eire is most of the time, but at that altitude it is hard to see the waves.
How much are you paying for petrol for your 582 these days?

Hi Thom
The sea was pretty flat it was a nice evening flight with just a few bumps here and there in the circuit as the heat left the day the advantage of flying in my local area is that if you get tired of bouncing around you can always head out over the bay and find smooth air for a bit of a rest before wrestling your way around the circuit. Locally mogas is around £1 16/ 17p per litre so filling to the brim with fuel is around £46 plus oil .Thankfully my 582 seems pretty frugal compared to others here at Ince If just pottering around at about 50/55 mph it can be using around 12 litres per hour at full weight (390 kgs in the uk)

I dont know the make of the compass >>
Hi Eddie,
It looked a bit like a Silva that I used to have on my boat so you could well be right. It was a sort of globe which could be mounted at all angles.
With my Extra I think I have a greater expanse of unsupported Lexan than you?.
I have been using a battery driven, very light plastic, car compasswith a suction cup, from Halfords but it has given up the ghost and it doesn`t seem to be on the shelves any more.
I don`t think there are many pilots who can fly within 5 degrees either side of a given course, specially when its a bit thermic, so spot on accuracy from a compass is wasted. There is always the one on the Garmin anyway.
I didn`t realise that you had so many windmills along the coast up there. Damn things are all over the place.I think that its just the government trying to show us that they are doing something as they are not very efficient. Putting the money into some tide driven electricity production would, I think be a much better proposition
Cheers
Pat
