All,=20
I am restoring a CGS Hawk with lots of mods and one is the =
fiberglass gear legs. I recently broke a tapered aluminum Firestar gear =
leg I had installed on my Ultrastar after an argument with a cornfield =
last fall. This got me thinking about alternative gear legs and here is =
my latest brain " flagelance"...The CGS used straight aluminum =
tubing for the gear legs that broke easily in the last off field landing =
accident (not mine )....Why not use solid wood inside the aluminum gear =
legs...easily done on a wood lathe to the correct dimension and then =
epoxied or just drilled using the existing bolt mounts. The type of wood =
used could be something flexible or more rigid depending on preference. =
Thickness of aluminum could be adjusted also...
Anybody ever try this ?

P. S. .....Patt....All I know about the Chuck Yeager's remarks =
are that he criticized the decision making of Scott Crossfield ....in =
hindsight ...accurate because Crossfield is dead ...Yeager can be a =
little blunt and too the point...

You would need a way to keep them dry,
because moisture would corrode the aluminum?

I believe CGS now uses fiberglass gear. I will probably be putting
fiberglass on my firestar when I get to that point.
Challenger uses hollow aluminum tubes. It works great on the single places
and works on the two place planes. With two place planes weighting close to
500 ilbs they start to bow after a while. I put over 200 hours on mine. I
never bent them in any single one landing but after 200 hours they started
to have bow in them. I replaced it with fiberglass and have about 130 hours
on them with no problems. My plane weights close to 500 and I fly off grass.
I am sure the fiberglass will do just fine on a firestar.

Could also cause the wood to swell and split the aluminum.

I tried putting fiberglass rods in my old Hawk legs (same idea - different material). Built one in 1983 when they first came out. The Alum legs still bent, the fiberglass rods bent too, and stayed bent. But they probably weighed about 10 pounds each.

What !
We're not allowed to talk about our old flames ...I mean planes?
The mighty "CGS Hawk" was the state of the art back in 1983.
Double surfaced wings - that was something back then!
Ailerons, not spoilers - that was big back then!
Flaps - that actually did something - that was unbelievable!
FYI - Even Chuck"whatshisname" (the inventor) - was surprised that
the flaps worked.
