I can vouch for the wonderful design and engineering that Chris Heintz d=
id on the 801. When I floated my desire to install a V-8 Ford in my 801 =
all the guys at the ZAC kinda wished me well but none expressed any real=
doubt of the results. Now after reaching 100 hours I am sure the airfra=
me is more then strong enough. It shows absolutely no signs of deforming=
at all the attach points. The two real things that I fought through the=
first few hours was...
1- Trying to keep the beast from overheating,... I have attributed t=
hat to the fact that the 801 flys sooo slow the actual ram air pressure =
going through the rad and oil cooler was not enough to exchange heat to =
the airstream. Those issues are in the past..
2- The one area that almost bit me was taking off with full flaps and =
full power. I have a 0-150 mph airspeed indicator. I once tried to keep =
the stick all the way back and let it fly off. Just as the needle came a=
live, somewhere about 28 mph, the plane lifted off. Because of the rathe=
r large prop blast the tail feathers work to a degree, the real problem=
is that the flaperons when fully deployed are not effective at that slo=
w of an airspeed. The plane torque rolled and tried to hurt me !!!!!!!! =
Needless to say I will not repeat that stunt again, I will not rotate t=
ill I see at least 35 mph now. With that all said, I LOVE my 801 .!!!!!=
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's great news. I'm heading to Cloverdale, CA this weekend for the Qu=
ality Sportsplanes Fly-in where I hope to see more. Florida is on my lis=
t.
My 701 will not be standard. I've hesitated to post this due to response=
s like you received earlier, but I'm actually building a 701 at 110% of =
stock dimensions and using a 601 firewall, just so I can use the Corvair=
powerplant and go for 1320# gross.
Now, before I get flamed, I spent two months reviewing the standard 701S=
P plans and reviewed every on-line 801 drawing I could get at Zenith's s=
ite. Only then did I calculate structural and material changes required =
to get a little more interior room, the higher GVW and the ability to us=
e that lovely Corvair powerplant.
I submitted 2 pages of proposed modifications to Chris Heintz for review=
and other than a suggestion for a .032" HT spar material thickness, my =
plans were approved. Mathieu tells me that my proposed mod's are very si=
milar to the working calcs for the briefly mentioned CH750. And sorry, n=
o, I won't share my changes with the open community as I don't want to b=
e on the hook for anyone else's skin but my own...
I'm glad to hear that William is giving it a go with the 701. His relati=
onship with Zenith and the Heintz family can only bring good things for =
all who are appreciative of the harmonious ZenVair. =
Those who don't care for this combo are welcome to continue flaming away=
. We consider the source of all of the prattle that can fill these board=
s. To each, his or her own, and may everyone enjoy this amazing hobby.
Thanks again to everyone in this community who have so freely shared USE=
FUL information with those of us who have chosen to LEARN, BUILD & FLY.
