Hi all

  

 I'm intending to install a Comant "cat whisker" style antenna in the tail of my -10 and want to rivet a doubler in there before closing up the tail.  Can anyone provide a bolt or screw pattern for me and the size of nut plates required to secure it?  The antenna is a CI 157P or possibly the CI 158C which is the removable element version.  I've searched the web but can't seem to find anything.  Thx.

Use #8 nutplates with flat head hardware. If your vee dipole is going to be forward like mine then the two holes in front are closer together than the two in the rear. Here is the dimensions: Distance between two front holes= 1.000"; dist between two rear holes= 1.300"; dist between front set and rear set of holes= 1.625"; you will need 0.575" hole for connector that will be drilled 0.865" from front set of holes and 0.760" from rear set of holes. Connector hole is centered left to right.

Just in time. I installed a copper strip antenna in my cabin top when I built my plane and it works fine when I am going to or from the VOR, but I was having some problems with it on the localizer north of Reno, NV. I was getting an erratic signal in the turns - way out from the localizer, so I am installing a regular cat whiskers on my underbelly. I got a RAMI antenna which looks nice and was reasonably priced from Vans web site. But I need some suggestions on placement. I prefer that the "whiskers" do not stick out. Any help will be appreciated !

I put mine under the fuselage, below horizontal stabilizer where it is protected by the stabilizer.  Also, if birds decide to perch on the antenna, you will get the droppings on the ground and not on the plane.

Mike, I had a discussion with my current avionics guy (25 years experience) at Brant Aero (CYFD), which happens to be right beside Aircraft Spruce Canada.  His opinion is that for the money the cats whisker (Comant) antenna is a great deal and performer.  Having said that the Rami is even less expensive.  I never discussed the Rami with my guy, but do know that the Comant has the balun built into the antenna  and I don't believe the Rami does.  Not sure how or if that's important.
