Roger,

The Rotax Illustrated Parts Catalog shows a shim between the spring and the cap screw.  Does that shim need to be retained when replacing the other parts of the regulator assembly?

Thanks,
Paul Kuntz

Hi Paul,

That shim is not a stock installed factory part. It is only there if you need to raise the oil pressure because of a weak spring. It raises it about 7-9 psi. It will not be in your engine unless you put it there. And never put a shim in there without first using a mechanical gauge to double check the pressure against what you think is a low pressure from the gauge in the cockpit. You could easily go above max oil pressure and the gauge in the cockpit would be lying to you. It is better to have quantity than just pressure for our engine so long as it is within parameters.

Roger and all,

Is there a SB on this new regulator? I'm just curious if my engine does or doesn't have whatever the new parts are in it already (it's a 2005/6 vintage 912ULS). I'm not really inclined to replace them since I'm not having any problems with my oil pressure that I can see (only fluctuates a few PSI). But if it _is_ an SB or alert that's strongly suggested or worse, Wink, I should probably go ahead and do it...

I couldn't find a SB or SI on rotax-owner.com on this, so just wondering...

Thanks,
LS

Hi Lucien,
Your engine of 2005 does not qualify for the 2000 TOB. The cut off for the engine serial numbers was right around July 2006 or right in there. you would need to look at the bulletin if your engine falls right in that time period.
The Rotax SB was SB912-057UL, but had a revision and is now SB912-041UL R2
for the 912ULS

The 912 80 hp is:

I would recommend that all do this little part swap. It is easy and not costly and does help.

Yeah mine missed it by about a year. And I'd have to replace the crankcase halves among the other things to make it qualify (may as well get a new engine). But mine will probably time out before I even get 1500 hours (unless I suddenly get more time to fly) so I'm not too worried about it.

And like I said my oil pressure doesn't seem to be a problem anyway. Stays in the low 40's which is well in spec...

Hi Lucien,

With the new oil pressure parts your oil pressure would most likely go up 5 or more psi. Some have gone up 10-12 psi.

Try asking on the MGL users' list. Lots of members including the founder of MGL (Rainier) and all the dealers around the world.
