Eddie/Gang:

Merry Christmas to you and all the rest of the Kolb gang in the UK. You
too, Patrick L. Wink

Never seen more beautiful Kolb photos, especially on Christmas Day, on and
over the snow covered English countryside.

Thanks for sharing with us.

It is refreshing to see and read about a Kolber that braves weather like
this to fly and take pictures.

I like this much better than reading about buying motorcycles and searching
for totally non-Kolb related items. Please help us keep the Kolb List about
Kolbs. Thanks, folks.

Take care,

john h

a microlight (ultralight) flying club and school are based there My nephew is one of the instructors
While we were up I got about 30 mins of video as well and will put that on you tube when I edit out the worst of the shaky bits . Christmas day here is the one day of the year that John lennon airport is closed so we Contacted Manchester airport and got permission to fly up the river Mersey as far as the City center to the Liver Buildings. that is the Video and may be of interest to you . We had a great flight but was a bit iffy landing on an icy snowed up runway

Thanks for the cool tour of your country. Life must be easy there by the prime meridian. Never any difficult math. Smile

Ok, this flight officially makes me a weenie. Good on you for braving the cold to fly on such a beautiful Christmas Day.

Dave
I wouldnt say brave and this makes no one a weenie after 40 odd years of motorcycling in this country (all weather biker including winter weekend camps) I know that you can cope for a while with cold, if you can get enough layers of clothing and still be able to comfortably move around and not restrict blood flow to your extremities. This flight was about 45 mins. To be honest although fingers and toes were cold when we landed it was actually quite pleasent in the air the kolb cockpit does a good job as a mini greenhouse when the sun is out, it was worse rigging and de rigging the aircraft as gloves and small safety clips dont go well together and if you dropped one in the snow ....goodbye forever to that one
After the flight I had to put the plane on its tail trolley and tow it back to the hanger with my 4x4 as it was challenging to say the least when off the scraped parts of the runway It would not have been possible to fly at all if not for other club members who had timeto spare over the last few days and cobbled together an old trike trailer some scaffolding planks and some ballast weight into a homemade snowplough

Thanks for the great video, Eddie.

I sent the link to my son-in-law (from Carlisle) who went to college in Liverpool and now teaches at a college here in Buffalo, New York. Though he has never flown low and slow over Liverpool, I'm sure he will recognize some of the landmarks you overflew.

You too, Patrick L. Wink>>

Gee, I have been specialy selected. Did that message come from Readers
Digest? No?

I did not fly my Kolb over Christmas.
Does that make this Kolb related?
I spent Boxing Day with 10 visitors in the house, including 3 children, 2
burst pipes and a hole in the kitchen ceiling and the outside temps at 12C
below..

First the water went off as the pipes froze, great with 10 people waiting to
use the lavatories, then the water came back on as the pipes thawed, and
burst and water poured through the ceiling.

Sorry this is not Kolb related John. I promise that this is the last time I
send such a message in 2010

I trust things went more smoothly at the Hollow.

Happy New Year John and to everyone on the list

Cheers

Pat

Hi Eddie,

Great pics. Nice looking plane. I like the red struts. They really pick out the line.

Mine is red/white also but not as neat as yours.

The weather has broken down here in the south. Roads are clear and all snow is gone. Floods to look forward to now I suppose. Not forgetting the fact that we shall probably get the tailend of the snow now falling in American East Coast in about a week.

Cheers and have a good New Year

Pat

By the way did you read my `Parlez-vous franglais` letter in Microlight Flying?. Caused a few chuckles on my field.

Thanks Pat
It Looks ok in the photos but in reality with its first flight being april 1995 she is showing her age a bit when you get close . I spend a fair bit of time each year chasing rust away from the cage tubes and also as I bought her part repaired after an engine out on landing here at ince some of the fabric is more patches than fabric . That said she flies well and with two up and full fuel I often see in excess of 800 fpm on the vario . and If just pottering about locally can use as little as 12/13 litres an hour.
I would love to recover the whole thing and powder coat the metal work but as I am just really getting comfortable flying her now after owning / repairing for about four years I dont want to take her out of the air untill my inspector says I have to.
HAve a good new year yourself if I can get day a pass from she who must be obeyed I am going to try and fly new years day .It depends on the airfield , Ince can get very waterlogged and after all the snow it will probably be about a foot deep outside my hanger/trailer I will just have to keep my fingers crossed .
Happy new year to all on the list and looking forward to another years kolbing in the Uk
