My forward top skin is in place and all that is left to do is build the Baggage Door. Other than the Carbon Fiber door option does anyone have any suggestions for a better latching system to secure the Baggage Door? Also any tips, tricks or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to taxi testing in a couple of weeks!

Hey Robin,

John Huft had a nice hidden hinge system with a gas strut I used on my 8,  works real well and eliminates the need for a rod to keep the door open.  You can find a link to his sight from the Vans website under:  Resources/RV8/John Huft/Modifications/Hidden Hinges.   I used Van's locking system and it has work flawlessly and if installed correctly really cinches the door down tightly.

Good Luck,

Paul

I recently completed my baggage door using Vans instructions. Took numerous iterations but I am quite pleased how it turned out. I went to the local locksmith and purchased a reasonably priced lock – one where the key cannot be removed unless the thing is locked. Although not 100% fullproof - I guess you can miss a key sticking up from the baggage door – but it is an indicator of an incomplete preflight!

I found the rod extension to lock the door provided the force needed to make the door set flush.

It is possible to get your baggage door to lay perfectly with out force.  Put a very very slight curve in the lower lip of the door before assembly to smoothly fit the fuse side.  after the ribs are on, put the door on the AC and check the fit.  Stretch or shrink the ribs to change their curve and you can get the door to lay flat with no pressure.  Mark where the rivets for the inside panel will go so as to not remove metal there.   To shrink the rib cut a notch in the flange and flute the rib slightly.  To stretch cut a notch in the flange and and squeeze (beat) rib with pneumatic squeezer or rivet gun.  Rivet back panel to door.
