Mr. Nuckolls,
Although you made a few references in your handbook, I have been unable to find anything else on Hall effect load metering. A few fellows here at EAA 91 have glass engine monitors with Hall effect metering. Any hints on where to buy parts or ready to install package? Was a DIY kit ever developed.

I had some notions of doing a hall effect based
ammeter for the OBAM industry. Even proposed a
package in the 'Connection. Upon further reflection,
I compared the high parts count, the need for
a power supply, drift and calibration challenges
with the elegant simplicity of a shunt and basic
meter movement.

Just couldn't get my juices going for development
of a stand-alone hall-effect load meter. Having
said that, it makes a lot of sense to add a hall-
sensor to an instrumentation package that is already
configured to do a lot of things OTHER than watch
currents. You need add only one more channel of
capability to an already complex system.

So, I've limited our offerings to the hammer-n-tongs
version of the legacy load meter

If you're interested in developing you own hall
based load meter, check out the specifications on
this small sampling of hall sensors

The ZAP100 could be combined with an instrument like
this

with a minimum of additional electronics
to give you a 100A readout with 0.1 amp
resolution.
