Hey Guys,
A while back it was mentioned that the steel 3/8 24 tow stud bolts that fit into the aluminum nose wheel forks, sometimes strip out and are much better with stainless helicoil inserts. I made mental note to be careful so as to never need to do this. Well, with abuse to the nose pants, difficulty getting the bolt started, force on tow bar -- whatever, one of the bolts stripped out on Wes's plane. Just when I thought I was entitled to a bit of smugness, another lesson in humility!
A trip to several auto places revealed that in my area, only NAPA carried the 3/8 24 kit ... for $50. So with no immediate options, we got it, and it worked perfectly, and just took a few minutes with the pants off (the NOSEWHEEL pants, wiseguys).
I really would recommend to just go ahead and install these at your convenience so that you don't end up in a bind somewhere down the line with no way to tow.
My thought as coordinator of the "traveling seatbelt countersink", was to see if there is any interest in sending this kit around as needed. For a fee of say $5 (for the two inserts) plus shipping, it sure would be cheaper than everyone buying this kit that will (hopefully) sit unused in the shop from now on.
Let me know if there's any interest. Later, - Lew
