I don't remember ever hearing on hear about anyone using a surplus 4A084
engine to power a Kolb. I'd like to hear if anyone has.
Thanks

Not many have heard of it. Those who have probably put off by the weight. Stripped down it might be ok.

I bought one and mounted it on a mobile test stand that weighed about 350 lbs. [like a go cart].don't remember size of prop. It would get up to about 35 mph. We tried various carbs. but never felt we had enough power to fly a Kolb.

We did see a Skyraider [?] or something fly with an 084 at a fly-in, but climb was very anemic.

We also tried a 4A032 with a redrive. Cute little engine, but very weak

I understand a number of folks use them. I am not sure how happy they are or what kind of planes. A friend put one on a light plane, weighs about the same as my Firestar I. That flew good, sorta. Top speed 70, climb was only about 500'/sec. Maybe it is too week...

I think everybody agrees the 032 is just too small. One guy got off the ground and out of ground effect a lil bit, but it was very marginal.

There is at least one guy flying a 2A042 (1/2 the 084) and his lil plane seems to fly purdy good. Haven't read a write-up on it, it's a minimax. So, I dunno. I want a safe fun plane, but if I get more than twice the hours/tank than my 503, then maybe I'd give up some climb rate.

Rick,

These engines are available at NASA.  However, I think I heard somewhere where their fuel
was referred to as "solid".   (SRB's).  Maybe after Monday's last Space Shuttle launch any remaining
inventory will be put on sale at super cheap prices.   Should make your MkIII climb reeeeally well!!!

Yeah, I checked into that. The expected auction prices are not bad, but the shipping is just totally outrageous!
