Good point on the winds, James. That was one of the reasons we wanted to
limit the race window to just one or two hours, to make conditions for
everyone as reasonably close as we could. The rest of the difference was
to have been made up for by "airmanship", i.e. who was best at picking
conditions that were most favorable during even that narrow window:
Smoothest time to fly, most favorable winds, best visibility, best
altitudes to climb to between turns, etc.
Btw, I may be ready to take you up on your suggestion about on-board GPS
systems for the race. Just haven't figured out how to get them to the
competitors prior to the race yet.
Thanks again, Palmetto Flight. The crowd really did enjoy your show---the
applause was genuine, there was a lot while you were flying your routine
too! Maybe next year I can get someone in my back seat with a video camera
and we can get some footage of your routine.
