My 1992 Kolb MKIII is equipped with very basic avionics:

-Garmin 196 GPS I purchased in 2003.

-ICOM A6 Handheld VHF Radio.

During my recent flight to Oregon, I was able to test this little handheld
radio at great distances. 50 miles out, communication with the Rock House
base station was excellent. On my departure, Larry C and I were still
chatting at 60 miles with excellent results. The A6 is attached to a 21"
ELT antenna with 6 feet of coax. I use a small circular aluminum ground
plane on the bottom of the nose pod. A6 is connected to aircraft 12VDC to
keep the radio battery charged during flight.

Of course, this is clear, straight line distance. Put an obstacle, like a
hill or a mountain in the way and communication goes away.

I wish all my stuff worked as well as the Garmin 196. I use it in my
airplane and in my truck. Have never had a problem with it. I wear the 196
on my left thigh. I have a Commant GPS antenna mounted on the top of the
center section, and the GPS is operated off aircraft 12VDC power, with
internal AA bats for backup.

With this very basic load of avionics I have been able to fly much of the
lower 48, Canada, and Alaska.

Keep it simple.
