While at OSH, we ran across a vendor who has a newly stc'd
electronic ignition available. They are hard at work on the adding all
the Grumman AA1's and AA5's to the the AML. This seems to be a proven
product with over 2500 installed in experimental's .
The system
keeps one of your Mags (for safety & back up) and substitutes a
pick up sensor in place of the second mag. You should see an increase
in efficiency and performance. Fuel savings should be in the 10%-15%
range, there will be an increase in usable horsepower and high altitude
performance.
I have spoken with the President Michael Kobylik and
he is eager to work with our group to get his product out there. We
have discussed a group buy and the discount will be determined by the
response from customers.
Mike has asked that I
send out some feelers to the group so he can judge the interest.
This
seems like a great product and since it is already STC'd for all 4 cyl.
Lycoming powered Cessna's, it is just a matter of adding the Grumman's
to the AML which should take 30-45 days. We are scheduled to install a
unit when the AML is done and can provide feedback at that time

The system looks to be very high quality and simple. There are no overhaul requirements, just inspection at tbo before installing a new engine if you choose to do so at that time. We have used similar systems in race cars and have had excellent results.

Electroair, the “first to advance ignition”, announced today the receipt of the first FAA
Supplement Type Certificate (STC) for a pure electronic general aviation piston engine
ignition system. The initial STC is engine specific for all Lycoming four cylinder
engines installed on Cessna Aircraft – additional airframe eligibility will be added over
the next few months. This STC allows installation of Electroair’s proprietary
computerized ignition system in certificated aircraft.
Significant performance and economy improvements have been documented in use of
Electroair’s ignition systems, over 2,500 of which have been previously installed in
experimental aircraft. With issuance of the FAA STC, virtually all certificated general
aviation aircraft will be able to enjoy the power and fuel economy the systems provide.
The Electroair electronic ignition system replaces one magneto with the following: an
RPM measurement device, a manifold pressure sensor and a high output coil all
controlled by a sophisticated and versatile controller to advance timing according to
altitude and provide a significantly hotter, longer duration spark than previously
available. Aircraft spark plugs are approved.
Electroair President, Michael Kobylik said upon receiving the STC, “Under the
leadership of the Chicago Small Aircraft Directorate, the FAA provided tremendous
support and careful guidance in our two-year long testing and documentation process,
leading to the design approval.”.
Industry sources see the very flexible electronic ignition system, perfected by Electroair
as part of the answer to changes in future aviation fuel and a way to achieve large
improvements in fuel consumption and performance enhancements right now. Electroair
anticipates obtaining STCs for all six cylinder Continental and Lycoming engines over
