My RV7A, after nearly nine years, is just about ready to fly. I have been taxiing around and managed to iron out a couple of small bugs. The only big hurdle left is the final inspection. I think I have all the paperwork in order but there is one conundrum.
An old boss once told me if you copy someone’s work it is plagiarism; if you use more than one source it is research. I have done extensive research and with my own input have come up with “Normal Operating Checklists” (one page two sides), “Emergency Checklists” (two pages totaling 3 sides) and a “Pilot’s Operating Handbook” (now at 100+ pages and growing).
In my “Emergency Checklists” I have three occasions; for “CARBON MONOXIDE FUMES”, CABIN SMOKE REMOVAL” and “DITCHING”, where I have stated either “Canopy.... Unlatch” or “Canopy.... Slightly Open”. Then, I added a “WARNING... Unlatching the canopy in flight may result in separation of the canopy from the aircraft”.
What do we know about flying an RV6, RV7 or RV9 with the canopy open? Has anyone ever done this? Has anyone ever intentionally opened the canopy in flight? Has anyone ever had a canopy separation from the aircraft? This is again just part of the research.

I assume that you are talking about a slider. I had mine open up once just
after take off, due to me not following the checklist. It opened up about
15cm and then stopped. I could close it with one hand, after stabilizing the
aircraft in cruise flight. On the other hand we had a crash of an RV9 at a
neighboring field due to the same oversight, details not known to me

C-FLAM – almost ready to fly
I don't think you will have any major issues (except underwear
|
laundering) with either the tipup or slider. Sliders will typically open
a few inches & you can't force them any farther open while at normal
speeds. Tipups will rise a few inches in the rear (no more) & can't be
pulled closed unless you slow down a lot & deploy the flaps.
I've seen some forum chatter supporting my slider statement, but I can't
point you to any slider references (checking with Van's is always the
best policy on safety issues anyway). A friend has tested the tipup
(can't remember if it was a 6A or 9A; he's built both). He got the
results detailed above.
The -4 with tipover is another matter entirely. If the safety doesn't
catch it, it will 'unzip' the hinge rivets. (This is a design feature to
allow the canopy to depart if the occupants need to follow.)
