List,

Has anybody tied a 912-powered craft to a spring scale to determine "thrust" at max RPM?
In digging through my extensive assortment of stuff brought home by a pack rat I found a 0-400 pound spring scale with hooks on both ends........weighs equally well vertical & horizontal.
Obviously there are variables but it might be interesting to know just how much "pull" exists during run-up.

Idle minds want to know,

Regards,

Hi Zed,

I don't have your answer regarding static thrust, but I do have a
warning. This can be a misleading piece of information.

Static thrust comes from a combination of engine torque (HP) and
propeller pitch and length. It is OK for looking at the condition of
your engine, but it can kill you if you use it to maximize thrust for
flight. The problem is that the low pitch which works great when the
plane is standing still will not generate any thrust at all after it
reaches a relatively low speed. This means you won't generate good
flying speed even though you have reached a high static thrust. The
long pitch angle that works best in cruise flight will not work well
in the static condition.

This test is similar to measuring the pulling strength in a car in
first gear. It has some value but will not tell you how fast your car will go.

Good luck,

Paul

This won't tell you a lot about the 912 but I did use one of those 400
lb weight your bear scales to check the thrust of my Suburu, 350 lbs at
5000 RPM. That's not maximum horsepower, that's at 5500, but at my first
cut for pitch.
