Kolb Friends -
I am happy to be one of the first to report on the excellent outcome of this
year's Monument Valley Kolb group gathering!
About 20 airplanes were there for the event - 15 of them Kolbs. Slightly
more than half flew in; the others trailered their planes there.
(I don't want to list names, because I'm sure I will inadvertently forget to
mention someone. You'll see pictures with and names details posted on
somebody's website soon, I'm sure).
Plus, a few other light sport planes joined our group. There were two
Zenith 701's that flew in from Phoenix, a 1939 Luscombe from Louisiana, a
Murphy Rebel from New Mexico, and a pair of adventurous pilots who flew a
5-day flight down from Oregon; one lady in her 503 Drifter, and another
fellow in a 447 Ridge Runner ultralight. And of course, Dave Rains flew in
with his Cessna-175 heavy iron.
We were blessed with beautiful weather all weekend long. Folks began
arriving on Thursday afternoon, and filtered in thru Friday. The Saturday
flight line was a bustling activity center of colorful little airplanes,
cheerful people, and lots of that special comradery and socializing that is
unique to aviation people. Always a group of seated folks gathered in the
shade of somebody's wing, visiting. Oh, yeah - the flying scenery was
pretty good, too. Most of the flying was either in the morning, or late
afternoon, when the air was smooth, the shadows long, and the red rock
spires glowed red from the low sun angles.
I think it's important to mention two Kolbers' specifically who really
helped make this event special. Arizona Dave, and his gracious wife Eve,
hosted an amazing and vast spread of food for the entire group (30+) on
Saturday evening in the shade of a big cottonwood, next to their big motor
home in the campground. Thanks again, Pelletier's!
Also Dave Rains (who, incidentally, instigated the first MV gathering 4
years ago), who spent most of his free time giving rides in his Cessna.
Dave was giving rides to many of the Navajo locals who live there and are
employed by Goulding's. They were thrilled to see the monuments from the
unique perspective of a little airplane, having only seen them from ground
level all their lives. Talk about good PR for our group - good work Dave!
By Sunday noon, there was one, lonely Kolb left on the airstrip (Arizona
Dave's; they were still cleaning up from the previous evening's
festivities).
In all, the rally was a resounding success. It was enjoyable to meet
several Kolbers in person, where previously we only knew each other in the
virtual sense through the Kolb List. Watch for pictures to be posted over
the next few weeks.

To set the record right..... Erich Weaver, myself and a few others started
a trip in sept. 2002... we got part way through our trip and because of
rain and thunderstorms, the trip was ended early.... that dec or there
abouts. Erich emailed me through the list and asked if I would like to
finish our trip. I decided on a date and the first kolb MV trip in 2003
was soon history.
So my vote for the instigator of the kolb flyin at MV is Erich Weaver.
First year attendees.

John Hauck, mkIII
John Williamson, Kolbra
Larry Borne, truck and camper

Dave Rains, Iggie and Dennis Kirby, cesna 175
To the best of my memory.
