Kurt, I have new bearings, new oil pump (EA 82) and not a hole lot higher
than your pressures. Are they so low? Remember on the car it only has a
light that comes on at about 8-10 psi. I've been running mineral multi-grade
to run the engine in but changed to semi-synthetic today so will be
interested to see if there's a change. John

Rick,

I am using non-synthetic Castrol 20W50. OK temps on
the last flight of around 190-195, but 40-50 psi.
More around 40. I usually see a good 50. This last
few months the pressure has dropped and been variable,
but no leaks?

I bought some aviation 100 weight (from Sams Club in
FL) to try out. Have you used this?

If it gets hotter than this flight I can not pull to
idle and keep the pressure above 30 psi. That is what
I worry most about, idle pressure for landing. I have
seen it go to 20 on rollout, so I keep the rpm up.

I know there is very little force on the bearings at
idle, but I want to keep that front bearing out of
trouble.

I wish it had roller bearings on the crank.

Kurt,

What pressure are you seeing and at what temp? Are
you using a
semi-synthetic. I had great results with Castrol
20-50 Semi synthetic.

Rick

John,

Because we drive a prop, you need at least 30 psi to
keep from spinning and destroying the front (plane,
flywheel end) main bearing. One pilot spun the
bearing and froze the engine in flight several years
back, though he ran it to super high oil temps first
and then flew it again with out fixing it.

I installed a 30 psi pressure switch with idiot light
(that also drives my Hobbs) and a pressure gauge that
flashes at 30 psi too. Don't want to mess with low
pressure myself. As soon as I see the flashing gauge
on landing rollout, I up the RPM to keep it off.
Somehow the gauge catches it before the switch/light.

You run a turbo Kurt? Something that comes to mind is the bolt (drilled) on
the turbo oil feed banjo fitting. I have noticed that with the older turbos
the orifis in the bolt was larger, in the later water cooled models it was
reduced in size thus reducing the oil flow and oil pressure loss. By chance
you don't have an old fitting? Long shot perhaps. John

What are the oil temps? If they are normal I would hook up a mechanical
pressure gage you can look at after a short flight.
My engine did not use a sump but the general flow is, engine out----oil
filter----oil cooler----engine in. You can just crank the engine a few
turns to determine which is which with oil in the system. Make sure you
plumb the filter correct in/out, least you burst the filter or worse
starve the engine. If you have been running much at 20 PSI chances are
damage my be done and at least a teardown inspection needed. Since I did
not have a sump maybe someone else knows the routing for it. If you
install a thermostat such as the MOCAL it basically goes before the
cooler to bypass oil or flow when needed. Hope this helps.

Rick

Hi Bill/ralph?

How hot is hot when the pressure is 20?

20 psi is too low for any power runs, let alone
flight.
