Hello. I have a Zodiac 601 HDS with an 80 HP Rotax 912. I bought it from the
builder 3 years ago. The gentleman who built it wired it so that the Hobbs meter runs when the
master switch is on. Once he left the master on overnight and that ran the Hobbs overnight so he
made a separate switch for the Hobbs by taking over a switch that had been used for Nav lights.
I would like to rewire the Nav lights. I have heard that the Hobbs should not be wired to the Master but
should only run when the engine is engaged.
What say you, members of the jury? Thanks.
  Regards,
  Damien

				Damien:

Why do you have a Hobbs meter anyway?  Schools use a Hobbs Meter for charging students.  All you need are a TACH Hrs.
Pull the Hobbs, save the weight and SELL IT.
BTW - Hobbs Meters are hooked up to a Oil Pressure Switch so they start and stop recording when the engine is running.

If you have the UMA Taco, It has a yellow wire to connect to the Hour Meter, This produses power to the meter over 2800rpm, and is perfect.

Will you direct us to an exact link that has a UMA Hobbs Meter that records at over 2800 RPM?  I searched ACS and nothing popped up.
 Thanks,

				Barry,
I have the 2 1/4" Air Core 270° Movement with just the bear wires from the rear of the instrument. The Yellow wire is the 12V (turned on automatically) Output at 1800 RPM. The Wiring diagram below shows a 9pin Sub D connector with pin 4 showing the Taco output. I hope this helps.

Yes, it does help.  I did find the HOURMETER on ACS.  The ACS site does not mention the RPM when it starts recording nor do they mention if a sensor is required.  They are becoming more and more of a catalog shop and loosing contact with the builders.

 Thanks Rich,
 Barry

Westach's hour meter can be hooked up to the AC outlet of the dynamo (alternator). If the alternator isn't developing power, and the diode bridge in the regulator will keep it from feeding back from the battery, the hour meter doesn't run. You can see the wiring instructions here; http://www.westach.com/instructions/2C10-2.jpg
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger here Damien, my Kolb Mk III had a Honeywell hour meter. During a rebuild of the aircraft when I thought I had the original electrical system disabled I discovered that a wire I thought had no power drove the hour meter until the battery was completely discharged. I ran it on a bench power supply while I was working on the aircraft until it ran through all it's digits and got back to where it should be. After all that I discovered the Westach gauge and bought it.
