As one of the few AD Series 2 Pulsar owners, I will add that the Series 2
carries a max gross weight of 1200 pounds.

Subject: [Pulsar-Aviators] Pulsar weight restrictions

All the discussion on Pulsar gross weights got me back into the manuals,
news letters, and finally discussions with my favorite air craft designer. I
know there has been some confusion about this, and if you have a plane that
was purchased and built in stages, then this can be very confusing. So, here
is the simple explanation.

Early Pulsar kits had a sitka spruce wood spar. Spar caps of unidirectional
glass were added to the top and bottom of the spar for strength. On the
earliest wood spars, the spar caps did not go all the way to the wing tip.
The gross weight of a Pulsar built with these spars is 870 pounds. Latter in
the program, the spar caps were extended to almost the wing tip. With that,
the gross weight was upped to 900 pounds. 900 pounds is the max for the wood
spar. This is exactly as stated by Alan Gill for Pulsar aircraft in the UK.

Later Pulsars had the composite spar and gross weight was increased to 1060
pounds.

Please note, gross weight limitation is solely determined by the spar
material and spar caps. Composite wing skins and added glass to the spar
sides does not increase the max gross weight.

I have looked in the Skystar manuals and not found the numbers for their
aircraft, so will limit my comments to the Aerodesigns kits.

Flying an airplane over it's design limit is like driving a car, with smooth
tires, at high speed on a wet surface. You may get away with it, until you
hit a puddle, or in our case, turbulence. Turbulence adds G loading, and if
you are over design limits, the wing could fail, not a good situation.

Needless to say, this is a major safety issue, and thus my concern. If you
have any questions about this, please get back to me and I will try to get
an answer for you.

Fly safe,
See you at Oshkosh,
Greg

This series I,,II,,III,, or whatever always confused me. Aero Designs sold
a "Pulsar". Then a "Pulsar XP". Then a "Turbo Pulsar".

I have kit number 390- - - a Pulsar XP - with a composite spar fast build
wing kit. I haven't the slighterst idea whether it is a I,, II ,,, III or
whatever. Don't really care. As sold to me, it was and remains a "Pulsar
XP", not a series I,, II,,,or III..

I am away from home right now so I can't refer to my files but I seem to
remember that the gross weight that I was given was less than 1,200 - - - -
around 1,100 something.

I suspect that the records don't exist but the most helpful way to address
the issue of the evolujtion of gross weights would be to do it by kit
number if it is an Aero Designs kit. After that Pulsars could be
identified by a series number given to them by the new owners but to give
Aero Designs produced kits a series number is like putting tits on a boar.

Happy flying to all in whatever it is ! ! ! ! ! !

Hi Bernie ,

The various designations have always confused me but my kit from AD was definitely billed as a Series 2. The AD turbo pulsar demomstrator was a Series 2 with a 914.

It's also 1200 for the Series III. Not sure if there was any difference in spar design from the II to the III. I know the Series III was heavier, mine came in at 711 with a 912 and a bit heavier for those that had the 914. I can't fly mine under 1200 pounds gross with full fuel, my wife and I and 60 pounds of luggage. That puts it at 1320.

All the discussion on Pulsar gross weights got me back into the manuals, news letters, and finally discussions with my favorite air craft designer. I know there has been some confusion about this, and if you have a plane that was purchased and built in stages, then this can be very confusing. So, here is the simple explanation.

Early Pulsar kits had a sitka spruce wood spar. Spar caps of unidirectional glass were added to the top and bottom of the spar for strength. On the earliest wood spars, the spar caps did not go all the way to the wing tip. The gross weight of a Pulsar built with these spars is 870 pounds. Latter in the program, the spar caps were extended to almost the wing tip. With that, the gross weight was upped to 900 pounds. 900 pounds is the max for the wood spar. This is exactly as stated by Alan Gill for Pulsar aircraft in the UK.

Later Pulsars had the composite spar and gross weight was increased to 1060 pounds.

Please note, gross weight limitation is solely determined by the spar material and spar caps. Composite wing skins and added glass to the spar sides does not increase the max gross weight.

I have looked in the Skystar manuals and not found the numbers for their aircraft, so will limit my comments to the Aerodesigns kits.

Flying an airplane over it's design limit is like driving a car, with smooth tires, at high speed on a wet surface. You may get away with it, until you hit a puddle, or in our case, turbulence. Turbulence adds G loading, and if you are over design limits, the wing could fail, not a good situation.

Needless to say, this is a major safety issue, and thus my concern. If you have any questions about this, please get back to me and I will try to get an answer for you.

Fly safe,
See you at Oshkosh,

Bernie et al,

Mine is kit #456. It was one of the later kits produced by Aero Designs, designated Pulsar XP, composite spars, composite wing skins, and supplied in the kit were hydraulic brakes.
The documentation specifies MAUW 1060 lbs.

Aero Designs produced kits a series number is like putting tits on a boar

You have a very good memory. I incorporated several Skystar Series 3
improvements into my AD Series 2 including the wing root air inlets and I
used a Skystar FWF package. That's why I often refer to my plane as a Series
2.75.

I can't fly mine under 1200 pounds gross with full fuel, my wife and I and 60 pounds of luggage. That puts it at 1320.

I got another update on the series II. Bob Bye has s/n 505. Gross is 1200.
He says the vertical tail is 6 inches longer than the series I. It also has
the removable bottom cowl and larger wing tanks. But, as noted
by others, the empty weight is 630 pounds. Bob has installed a Jabiru 2200
and loves it, has over 200 hours of flying fun.
