I just bought a 601HDS (N305BM #MM020) from the widow of a friend but she can’t find ANY documentation or logs. I tried to contact the builder but he’s disappeared and Zenith won’t help me because they say the serial number is not in their records. I have questions about fuel system and have been trying to get all the info I can find. I have gone through the forum and found many useful posts but would like to chat with someone familiar with the design. Would anyone here be interested in giving me a hand? I would also like copies of fuel system as designed.

The plane looks OK except for what I consider serious deficiencies in the “plumbing”. The canopy is a terrible mess as well. It looks like someone didn’t like to full span hinges on the ailerons and that they almost literally hacked the skin apart with a saw and bolted on hinges Sad smile

Other than these things the plane has only 34 hrs on the hobbs with a 235 Lyc.. I have a pix of the Zodiac HD Super" (or "Speedwing" as I like to call her) as well as my other planes on my facebook page

I have been flying and restoring antiques for 35 ears but this is my first experimental and spam can (I usually go for rag wing taildraggers) and I have three 1940’s Taylorcrafts and a 1951 Bellanca Cruisemaster

				Hi,
I'd recommend you place an ad for used plans for the HDS in the Matronics forum Zenith 601 group.
Lots of info there. Then, there's my site which has some specific information on fuel, electrical etc.

				Larry,

I've been studying your outstanding site, hope you'll keep it running for a while after changing planes. I have a 1951 Cruisemaster and a few Taylorcrafts too. The Zodiac is my first "spam can" LOL You can see my planes at http://www.facebook.com/airplayn

If you're not on facebook try this link:

 http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1392733051606.2050731.1030543267&type=1&l=61f7aff6bf

I only need a serial number to get registered on their builder's forum but Zenith said my serial # MM020 is not valid (they need one starting with a "6") Can't get in touch with the builder, a Morgan Melton in Missouri. Maybe someone who is already registered would allow me to use their password to get on the builder's forum. Or I guess I could see if anyone who is finished or doesn't need the forum will let just let me us their serial number to get registered on the forum.

I appreciate the extra work you did to put your impressive knowledge on the 601 on the web to help others. Thanks.

If you're ever in AZ let me know and I'll show you around. We have a lot in common. In the past I designed some prototype equipment as a consulting engineer. I do a lot of machine and metal work and even have a TIG welder.

				Tim,
I’ve sold a few plans for recumbent and bend brake, so the site will stay until my last few pieces are gone and the list of builders dwindles further.  I still have a few
Questions to answer each day so it may be a year or more.
You have a rather nice collection of aircraft.  I’ve a friend Cy Galley that has a Bellanca that’s been in repair for 4 or more years.
 Fly Safe,

 Larry

				Tim,
Morgan Melton is still listed in the FAA Airmen database (www.faa.gov). You can find his information updated in 2010 there. The FAA allows the manufacturer to use whatever serial number they choose. At some point in the past ZAC starting "asking" everyone to use their plans number as the serial number. Mr. Melton evidently registered his plane in 2003 before that.

				Hi Jeff,

Zenith will not process any number that does not start with a "6". N305BM was started in the late 90's but was registered in 2003. They were adamant about that.

I found Mr. Melton 's phone number listed in Bois D'Arc, MO but the didn't return my call. I have receipts with his name and he shows up in NTSB records for an accident in the 80's in another home built.

It's a little hard to feel good about doing an inspection on an airplane without ANY documentation. I'm also not to familiar with homebuilt standards as I've only restored STC'd aircraft before this. An advice you have is appreciated.

  Thanks for the feedback.

It looks like you can still buy a set of plans from Zenith: http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/6-price.html. They list them for $340. It might be worth the investment.

That MM020 is probably a builder assigned serial number for the FAA paperwork, not a Zenith plans serial number. The builder of a plans-built E-AB can call the plane anything he wants and can assign any serial number he wants. You just have to put something in the blanks on the FAA forms.

You're trying to use the serial number the owner used on his data plate, not the serial number of the plans. It would seem Zenith would be able to give you the number of the plans based on the name of the person he purchased it from, if he was the first owner.

They might be able to do that, but there might be legal or privacy issues preventing them from doing so.
