Hi List,

I am trying to run fuel lines from firewall to mechanical fuel pump on my (new) 0235-N2C engine and I am running in to a couple of challenges.  I am hoping you guys can help.

I am trying to use the nice aluminum AN connectors.  One issue is the size that seems appropriate screws all the way and never really tightens until it gets to the very last thread.  If you look at the pump where this connector goes it looks like it is machined to take some type of O ring or rubber grommet/gasket.

Also, the fitting for the hose would seem to “naturally” be for a ID of 3/8.  Everything else in the ZAC world is for ¼” ID on the fuel hose and parts they supply.  It seems to me I will need some type of step or step down to mate from the firewall connector to the fuel pump.  Unless there is a AN connector that will fit in to the fuel pump that has a 1/5 in hose barb.

Does anyone (especially anyone flying behind an 0235) have any pictures of how their fuel lines connect to the fuel pump?  Or do you have any suggestions for the proper AN parts?

I am having a lot of fun but it seems like I keep running into road blocks and gotchas!

Steve

Steve,

Check out http://zodiac.cpc-world.com/images/IMG_1284_JPG.jpg and http://zodiac.cpc-world.com/images/IMG_1304_JPG.jpg .

I have an O-200 fitted and replaced all the Zenith fuel lines with aluminium tubing and AN fittings. The only flexible hose is from the pumps to the Carb.

You can check out Aircraft Spruce’s site for AN fittings (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/ha/an.html).

I purchased fuel pumps have the correct fittings for AN connectors rather than barb fittings.

I could draw you up a plan with the fittings used if you give me a day or so.

Cheers

Steve:

I know you are building an Experimental plane but in the area of fuel lines I would stick with what works for Certified aircraft and what is in AC 43-13.
Stick with the aluminum tubing and AN fittings.  Stick with the 3/8" ID tubing.  There are requirement for fuel flow at max RPM/HP that should be adhered to if ONLY for safety reasons.
As for the fittings:
The 'O' ring type fitting - How to identify - It will have a grove to capture the O ring and it will especially have the grove/capture part to the OUTSIDE of the O ring.  This type of fitting goes on the CARB.  The Carb may be grooved for the O ring also. BUT!  Either the Carb or the fitting will be grooved - NOT - Both.

Do NOT use barbed fittings... Yes, they are out there but let that be someone else's headache not yours.  Those type fittings and the hoses that match should not be used under the cowl - HEAT - area.

DO NOT use a step down fitting ... Or for that matter even a step up since you will be using 3/8" from beginning to end.  AND... Consider this:  The supplied fittings are probably for the more common ROTAX engine with a lower fuel flow.  AND yes, I have seen plastic fuel lines on ROTAX installs... Not To Smart - In my and AC 43-13 opinions.

Sorry I do not have any pictures - BUT!  Take a look at Cessna 150/152's, they use the O-235 engine and so do Grumman AA1's.
When it comes to fuel flow, think of it this way:
If the fuel line is too small and you have even a small fuel starvation problem you will wind up with higher EGT, CHT and Oil Temps (OT).  AND you would probably never consider fuel flow TO the engine as being a problem.  Just think of ALL the problem tracing you would go through and NEVER consider the fuel line as the problem!

Steve, can you post some pictures of the fittings and pump and the fit you are talking about.  It would help greatly.
Barry

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the great pics and advice.  Can you send a clearer picture of how you have your fuel pressure sender teed in to your system?

Steve,

http://zodiac.cpc-world.com/images/IMG_1297_JPG.jpg is the only one I have at the moment.

The black covered sender (to the right) on the (Vans RV) manifold is the fuel pressure sender. It is plumbed directly into the output of the pumps via a tee AN fitting (behind the engine mount!). The other sender with the flexible hose is the oil pressure sender.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Subject: Fuel line Questions

Steve

Price is $76 * 2.  You need two of these!

Hi List,

After much homework I found out a few things about this.

1) For the newer Lycoming engine the fuel pump has a proprietary part that fits the intake and outflow for the fuel pump. The part number is LW-16562. Good freaking luck finding this anywhere in the country. I must have spoken to 30 part houses and no one had any in stock. Quickest delivery time was 3 to 6 weeks. The price of this is $76. Pretty steep for what is essentially an AN fitting with a compression washer. Be warned though, regular AN fittings WILL NOT work.

2) Step in Van’s Aircraft. I was looking through their catalogue for something unrelated and ran across part umber KB-000 which is the EXACT same thing as the Lycoming part but sells for $5.00. It was in stock and shipped the same day. Some cool stuff in this catalogue. Not to be a ZAC traitor but this is a good thing to have on your shelf.

I wonder if I would have had any better luck simply talking to one of the A&P on the field where my project is coming together.

This was quite a lesson in the world of finding parts in the world of certified engines. Cost was crazy, many of the suppliers won’t even talk to you. But props need to go out to Poplar Grove Aviation (Poplar Grove Airmotive in Illinois. The phone number is 815 544 3471.) Kurt was amazingly helpful and finally found me the Lycoming part and was gracious enough to cancel the order after I was able to find it for $71 less dollars from Van’s. Steve from www.kitplanehoses.com was also incredibly helpful…and he deserves extra thanks.

I know it might seem like I am gushing. But you would not believe how much time I spent trying to find these. It was nuts.

Steve
