I am aware of the Grove gear. We have a few Pulsars flying with it. I just
do not believe it is the best option for the Pulsar and prefer the glass
gear. I plan to talk about this at the Pulsar reunion this year, as well as
the nose gear.

I think the Grove gear is best for the heavier Pulsar II & III. It certainly is in my case. It is more flexible then the glass gear was on landings.

The gear is made out of multiple layers of 17 oz. uni-directional glass of
varying lengths. I have planned a talk about this at the reunion.
The aluminum gear is much stronger than the attach points inside the
fuselage. A hard landing, a bad bounce, may not fail the gear but could fail the
attach points inside the fuselage. I like the idea of the gear absorbing
the stress.
Replacing the gear is a job. The bottom of the fuselage must be cut out the
same as when building. For ease of positioning the new gear, any wiring
and rudder control cables that are routed under the gear need to be moved out
of the way. Brake cables or brake lines should be removed or the axils
detached from the gear. Unbolt gear and remove from fuselage.
If you are repairing the gear, pay very close attention to the alignment of
the tabs. They must match up to the holes in the attach points inside the
fuselage. If you don't get them lined up correctly, then you will have to
replace the gear tabs and most likely the hard points inside the fuselage.
That turns a big job into a huge job. You will have to follow the
construction manual in glassing the hard points, paying very close attention to the
use of uni-directional glass.
That's my thoughts and I am sure there are more opinions on this and some
input from those that have replaced or repaired their gear.

Hi Greg,
I'm wondering, can you tell us how these legs are made? You mentioned
making a plug, but obviously the legs aren't hollow. Will you have to lay up a
structure one layer at a time? What would a cross section look like if you
cut one up?
Why are the aluminum ones not so great?
lastly, since I didn't actually build my Pulsar, what is the process for
replacing a damaged gear?
Thanks for taking this on. Might be good stuff for the reunion too?

Mile. I would have to take the tabs off. Would that be OK?

Greg, I have the true "original" gear from AD. I had installed it, but
then AD came out with the strengthened glass gear and suggested I pull the
original and use the revised gear.
I think the outside dimensions are identical if you want to use if for a
mold. It still has the aluminum/glass attach tabs on it.
