Can anyone help me with what material the exhaust pipes might be on my Yak52 tricycle? They appear to be original Russian pipes, they are NOT magnetic, and dark brown in color.

 Inconel?
 SST?

I need to cut the pipe, slide on a new nut, and TIG weld back together. Inconel 618 filler? SST 304/309?

 Thank you

If truly original, they are titanium. They could also be stainless steel.

				Doc,

Actually, tig welding is how you would weld titanium.
Probably not for the average welder.

Most of the exhaust I have seen are stainless steel. My one 52 had a engine out of a Yak 50 and they were titanium my other one was stainless. If you try to weld titanium with a tig using a ss rod you will blow a hole in it. Out of the 9 planes I fly with only mine was titanium the rest were Stainless. So one out of 9 and mine had a Yak 50 engine FWF installed according to the Russian Log.

I'm lucky enough to have had a brother of a friend that works in a local aerospace company that had a vacuum chamber that they used to repair my exhaust pipe segment after it cracked. It had cracked along the top of the segment in the bend off #9 cylinder. His advice was if a welder had tried to weld it in a regular shop with out a gas purge they would have blown a hole in it. hence my ill informed statement.
 Thanks for correcting me.

Titanium is not difficult to weld if properly shielded by inert gas.
Exhausts require plugging both ends and feeding in the inert gas through one
of the plugs after purging. SS exhaust requires a similar technique for
 proper welding.

What is the appropriate shielding gas and filler rod for titanium?

Anyone know of a good litmus test to determine titanium or SST?

Doug had a great technique of cutting the rings instead of the tube. Would be good to be armed with both options though.

Argon gas and titanium rod. Easy way to tell without grinding on it and looking at the sparks is to have someone weigh a stainless section and then you weigh yours. Titanium should be only 2/3 the weight of the stainless section. You can acid test it as well . Look on the web for a spark grind or acid/ chemical test. I don't remember off hand what the chemicals are, sorry. You will need to purge the inside of the exhaust with argon as well while welding it. Get someone to weld it for you if your not a good welder with good equipment. It will be cheap compared to buying a new exhaust because your newly welded one is off slightly and now doesn't fit. I thin you might try aircraft exhaust inc. they build and repair m-14 exhaust systems.
