Hello,

  

 I have just replaced the engine on my CJ (Housai 285hp).  I am unable to start to the engine.  Here is what I noticed.  First, there is no resistance when turning the prop.  I can turn the prop with 2 fingers easily all the way around.  Second, when pushing the starter the prop moves about a quarter turn then just stops.  Pushing the starter again it doesn't move at all.  I re-fill the air tank and again it only moves a quarter turn then stops.  I am suspecting it is a problem with the air pushing the prop around but I'm not sure where to look or what else it might be.

I assume you checked your valve clearance first and set them.



Might look at the valve timing again. 



If you did then do a compression check to see what's missing (hissing)



Did you buy this engine from Navy (inside Joke)

Plugs are all installed? Air start valves are tight and safety wired? Valve lash set? Do you have compression in each of the cylinders. That is an easy to check. Leave one plug in the cylinder, put your finger over the open plug port preferably the front bank. If you are developing compression you will feel it in your thumb as you pull the prop thru.

If you want to do a basic check pull the front plug on a easy  cylinder shine a light in the plug hole, move the prop and see if the piston  moves.  If it does at least the prop is connected to something other  than the reduction gears.
