Corvair people-
Anyone have the layout for attaching a Corvair mount to an HDS firewall? According to WW, they're the same for XL/HDS. I'm more interested in where to position the cross members at this stage in the game.
Yes, I'm getting lazy. More like I'm worn out from trying to keep from making a major mistake the past couple of weeks.
Thanks.

Bill,
I discovered that the dimensions given in the drawings for the location of the attach bolts is not very accurate. It is best to locate them with the attach brackets that are behind the firewall and attached to longerons. It would be best to drill pilot holes in the center of the face of the brackets, locate the brackets, then drill the holes in the firewall.

This is what I did and when I got WW's engine mount it went on without a problem.

Jay and everyone-
I'm not interested in exact hole locations at this point. My firewall is laying on the bench. My crossmembers, etc. are primed and ready to install. What I want to know is, where do I locate my crossmembers so I can be sure of having correct edge distance, etc., when drilling the Corvair engine mount bolt holes? Am I OK with going with the Zenith layout, which is designed with a Rotax in mind or do I have to do something different?

Bill,
If what you mean by braces are the mounting bolts
tack welded to the 4130 mounts that are bolted to the
upper and lower longerons, drill away. I attached
WW's engine mount directly to my firewall bolts with
no placement issues. Make sure that you do not have
the Rotax engine mount firewall bolts. These bolts
are too short. You will have to grind the tacks off,
remove them, and tack longer bolts in their place. I
can't remember the size, but maybe somebody else will
chime in...
I hope I read the question correctly...

Although my plans don't show it the engine mount fittings (6B6-4 and 5) come
from the factory in two forms: one with short bolts welded to the brackets
for the Rotax, Jabiru, Continental and conical Lycoming engine mounts and
one with long bolts for the Lycoming dynafocal mount. The short style works
with motor mounts that have flat plates at the firewall while the long style
works with mounts (like William Wynne's Corvair mount) with spools at the
firewall. I have factory-made parts in both styles.
I think that the factory has taken to delivering the brackets without the
bolts welded on. This allows you to line-drill all the parts after the
fuselage is put together. Nick sent me this back in Feb 2006:
"In the latest edition, we no longer weld the bolt to the engine mount
fitting. For the lower engine mount fittings, installing the bolt after the
fitting is installed to the fuselage allows for better alignment. For a 38mm
long bushing, allow approximately 3mm to go through the fitting, the doubler
and firewall = 41mm A better bolt to use is an AN6-22A (grip length =
1-11/16")"

Yes they have. When I decided on the Corvair I had already fitted the shorter bolt welded brackets. I replaced these with the non-welded ones that also have the canopy attach point.
One thing to keep in mind if you use these is you will need to attach the engine mount while you can still get to the back of the firewall.

Mark-
This is the answer to what I have been looking for. As you can see, I want to get this into the Matronics archives. Thanks.

All-
As you know, sometimes you save time by taking sthe time to research. I don't think this was a stupid question, and I think it's one that anyone considering a Corvair install should think about before punching holes in a hard to replace firewall.
Thanks to all for your input. Unlike the cattycorner brace question, there is a definitive answer to this one, and now it's in the archives for future builders to refer to.
It took me a week to get an answer to my question, probably because I didn't communicate exactly what I was looking for well. Now do all you listers see the need for a place you can go to get definitive answers to questions that have been puzzling builders since Moses was the foreman at Zenith?

To XL Corvair builders:
I need to start mounting "stuff" on my firewall. I am trying to follow WW recommendations, but since I don't have anything from WW, I am kind of working in the dark, mostly from photos. I have attached a pdf drawing of what I am planning. I would greatly appreciate any input, especially from those of you that have completed your FWF.
Thanks in advance,
Jay in Dallas

Bill,
It's not much of a "string" at this point; one reply does not a string make. In spite of that, yesterday I fabbed the mounting bracket for the ignition coils and today I installed them.

Jay, I don't know what photos you have but FWIW I have lots of shots of
these 601XL/Corvair installations:
- William's 601XL tail dragger
- Phil Maxson's 601XL
I've got 54 photos totaling 64 MB. I can stick these on a CD and mail it to
you if you want.
Also I assume you've browsed Chris Steiner's and Bill Howerton's sites?
http://homepage.mac.com/csteiner/PhotoAlbum8.html
http://bill.howerton.com/zodiac/engine_page.htm
Some folks apparently have early copies of William's long promised FWF
manual but not me.

Jay,
Sorry I can't really add anything, but I guess I'm doing essentially as you
are as far as figuring out the firewall layout (going by pictures etc.), as
what I have so far installed and planned to install matches your drawings
perfectly, with only exceptions being probably insignificant variations on
the placement of those items on the cockpit side of firewall. Anyway, it's
nice to know that at least someone else is thinking along the same lines,
and I really appreciate your taking the time to make and show your drawings
because if anyone finds fault with them I will probably have the same
problem.
Do not archve.
