That is a way cool engine set-up John! Congratulations on making it work. Thanks for the pics. Any plans for a cowling on it? As we all know, the round cowl of the early Kitfoxes was meant to simulate a radial engine, so it is good to see it actually have a real radial on it.

Marco + Lowell ; I do not have good numbers yet but should be good. Fuel burn is supposed to be about 5 GPH.Engine is heavy also had to add ballast to the tail . Rotec website is

I second Marco's request and maybe some performance numbers - climb, cruise
and fuel burn.

I think the BMW motorcycle engine will be a good one, many is flying in Europe, and they are relative cheep, old with carbs or new with electronic injection and ignition is used. the largest is 96 HP.

I love the look of a round engine on the Fox. They are clearly made for each other. Jim Cantrell's IV, shown on Rotec's site, would be beautiful with any engine but especially so with the Rotec. Jim, if you're out there . . . Nice Work! Do you plan to add a NACA ring cowl?

Can't wait to hear performance numbers. Keep us posted John.

Clint, no pard....I meant no where near as light as a 912!....
IN re-reading my post...I can see where it might have read like that tho!

Sometimes I wish I they would have offered courses in Journalism back at Spartan when I was there! I would have been way ahead to take them!

Don : No plans for a cowl yet . I did use the two rear cowl sections with some modifications . The engine is so beautiful it would be a shame to cover it up . Rotec was able to supply the engine mount , oil tank , exh. collecter , prop and instruments. John Murphy

Have been enjoying reading the posts on this topic. Here's a link to some folks developing a rotary engine for aircraft. Have been e-mailing them and the engine makers for a couple of years now, they seem to have a ways to go.

Interesting reading John, thanks. Looks like a good possibility for future engine choices. Reading the weights as compared to Continentals and Rotax 912UL was exciting until I read the fine print at the bottom of the page.

" ** Weight does not include PSRU, starting, charging, exhaust, cooling, or other accessory systems."

Does anybody know of any aircraft running one of these engines?

Hello Everyone,
I just got back to enjoying this thread; I had plans to be testing by now but got laid up three weeks because of staph infection. I just received the three blade prop last week and plan to try to make the first test next week. I do not plan to add a NACA ring cowl at this time. The R-2800 is too beautiful to cover up. My plane is a 5 TD, instead of the IV listed.
