Is that your own Europa, and when will you fly it, or do you still have
the Airmaster one?

It's the Airmaster one. She's looking a bit tired inside but has a big
smile on her face with her fancy new propeller.

I have just ripped the guts out of my instrument panel on mine to follow
in Paul's footsteps and have installed a Dynon Flightdek 180. The drop
in weight from the removal of all the other instruments and associated
wiring was quite dramatic! My problem is lack of time due to workload
and the house build.

The house pad has been cut and retaining walls established and we are
now just waiting on the building consent before construction starts. In
the meantime I've been putting in the drainpipes to feed the two water
tanks while Jackie is putting plants in where she can.

You'll be pleased to be moving in at last and you'll be able to spend
all summer clearing up the remains of the building site!!

I agree the warp drive blades are not ideal. In terms of the controller
what lack of capability are you talking about? I find the controller
perfect both in installation and use. I was put off by the Woodcomp
initially because of the gear drive in the hub. This has probably been
updated now. Its control boxes were too big to retrofit to my panel
whereas the Airmaster was small and neat and provides all the control I
want. I particularly like being able to select between T/O, Climb and
Cruise settings without taking my attention from the world outside.
Having started off with the NSI VP prop I was aware that VP without CS
causes a significant increase in workload.

I agree that the Airmaster is expensive but I believe they got most of
their development done before selling to the public. This was not the
case with the Woodcomp. Hopefully it is now at a stage where development
is just refining the product. Assuming this is the case then it is very
good value for money. When I bought my Airmaster I had been through a
lot of hassle with NSI and wanted a prop that did everything I wanted.
The Airmaster was the only one at the time that could provide that. As
in the choice of engines what is important is getting the right product.
Initial purchase price is only one part of the equation.

Hello Nigel,

If you compare the price of an airmaster (prop+controller) to the total price of one of my controllers + either an Arplast PV50 or the Woodcomp SR3000, the Airmaster is somewhat more expensive (in the UK). I have just checked the price on the Europa website and the airmaster is 3754 (inc VAT). The SR3000 + a CSC-1 is 3145 (inc VAT) so the difference is about 600 quid - not much or a significant saving depending on your state of wealth.

The CSC-1/G can be used with almost any prop that is controlled by electricity - that also includes the hydraulic props that use a master cylinder driven by an electric motor - GT make a prop like that and so does some other company. They are used on aircraft like the Tecnam and the Pioneer.

Incidentally, I am sure that the CSC-1/G would drive the airmaster hub quite happily but I don't think anyone has actually done that.

As for functionality, In one small(ish) enclosure, the CSC-1 provides:

* constant speed control

* RPM display

* manifold pressure display

* engine hours display

* prop pitch display (PV50 only)

* feather control (SR3000 only)

The ergonomics of the unit are such that you can switch modes and adjust the RPM without looking at the display - also external switches can be fitted for these functions so you can fit a switch next to the throttle or on top of your stick.

One nice extra that the CSC-1 gives you is that it detects when you shut the throttle (in cruise mode) and it inhibits the pitch from being reduced so that when you open the throttle again, the pitch hardly changes. So when you descend into the circuit it doesn't wind the prop back to fully fine during the descent. Not a major feature but a nice touch, nonetheless.

The Airmaster provides:

* constant speed controller

* feather control

I don't know if external switches can be fitted.

Anyway, for aeroplanes with little motors operating from short airstrips, a CS prop is a real boon whatever the brand. If you have a large motor and miles of runway, then one of the fancy fixed pitch props will provide better value.

As you say, at the time you fitted the airmaster it was probably the only sensible choice. Now, there is more choice.

The only reason for me to do that is if I was to benefit from extra
features. I already have constant speed control and the RPM display,
manifold pressure display and engine hours display are provided care of
my engine monitor. Prop pitch is fairly academic as I don't have the
PV50 and the Airmaster provides feathering as standard.

This is an interesting idea but as I usually do cruise descents with
increased speed and partial power there is not much pitch change anyway.
On longer trips I am often cruising at around FL60 and in smooth
conditions I usually set about 15" manifold and increase the speed to
Vno for the descent. This gives about 500fpm ROD providing a high speed
descent for about the last 20 miles of the flight. If I wanted to
positively hold the pitch angle with the Airmaster it is possible to
select manual but this hardly seems worthwhile.

I am very please you have come up with another very good product. The CS
function reduces a lot of unnecessary workload with a VP prop. This has
got to be good for flight safety for those with VP props who would
otherwise have no access to the CS function.
