I just fired up my 912 UL in a Zenith 701 for the first time yesterday. All went well, except my VDO tach was not working. Does anyone know what the correct DIP switch settings are? I apparently had the wrong ones set in the tach, or at least that is where my trouble shooting will start. Also, I taxied around for maybe about 10 minutes. In this time the oil temp came up to about 140 degrees but I got no reading on the CHT gauge. Is this normal, or is my CHT gauge not working? It to is the standard VDO CHT gauge. I must say the Rotax 912 is a smooth running engine.

George,

Congratulations on getting your engine running. I have a 80 HP Rotax in my 601HD. I'm afraid I can't help much with the VDO tach. It must be different than the one I have because there were no Dip swithches that needed to be set. When I built mine ZAC couldn't advise me as to the wiring on my tach. They said if it didn't work, to swap the wires. I lucked out, it worked the first time. I have the large diameter tach.

As for the VDO CHT, yes from my experience if your engine got warm enough to register an increase in the oil temp, you should hace seen an increase in your CHT. 10 minutes should be more than enough to see an increase in both oil temp ( normally up to about 120 degrees F ) and CHT up to about 170 to 180 degrees after 10 minutes of ground run. )

I'm helping a friend install a 80Hp Rotax in a new 701. I'd be interested in hearing any problems you encounter and your soutions so that we can gain from your experiences. We're working on the engine installation now.

Thanks.
