I did some number bashing just now, and came up with the following:
(all mile figures are statute miles)
getting there (Grass Lake, MI to Auburn, CA, via Hondo,
TX).......................3211.5 miles...............35.9 hours
flying time
flying while there (around the Auburn, Davis, Woodland, Cameron Park,
Eagles Nest, Sacramento, Dunnigan,
Rumsey, and Truckee-Tahoe areas....................................
764 miles.....................8.5 hours
coming back
home...............................................................
2185.5 miles................18.2 hours
total miles covered during entire
trip..................................6161 miles
total time spent in the
air.............................................................62.6
hours
total days spent on
trip.................................................................23
average speed of all flying........................................
98.4 miles per hour (you "knot junkies" can figure it out...if I
wanted to talk knots, I'd have built a boat) : )
fuel stops (including top-off at my hangar after
trip)......................18
fuel
used....................................................................
..........................246.03 gallons
fuel
costs...................................................................
.........................$1004.23 (US Dollars)
fuel price.....high / low / average................$4.53 (at) Kearney,
NB / $3.28 at home, based on last year's cost when I bought 250
gallons bulk...otherwise, $3.60 at first stop in Tell City, Indiana /
$4.08 avg.
miles per gallon.........................................25.04
gallons per hour..........................................3.93
cost per mile............................................$0.163
Incidentals: 3 nights spent in a tent
12 nights spent at homes of friends...thanks, Duane and
Jimmie, and of course, Caroline, and Doris....they had to burn the
sheets after I left.
7 nights spent in motels
If I can find any more ridiculous minutia to post, I will...you can
bank on it.

That's not bad at all, Lynn. At what RPM are you cruising?

Mostly about 2900-2950....sometimes I would see a 28XX, and would
twist in a few more rpm just to move things along.
As an aside, Michel, while I was at Auburn, CA, I removed the rocker
cover on the #1 cylinder...the one that had showed the greatest
rocker arm bushing wear a few weeks ago....and checked the valve
clearance. One valve was loose by .001". I called that good enough
(to not look any further), and re-set to .010", and put things back
together. Now that I'm home, I will pull all the covers and re-check
all valves.
To those that don't know the history of my engine, a Jabiru 2200,
about 6 weeks ago, I found the rocker arm bushings badly worn, and
changed the teflon-coated factory bushings for some brass bushings
that I got locally. I also drilled the rocker arms to allow for more
oil to reach the bushings. I don't know why my engine showed this
wear, as the Jabiru dealers don't show a history of this
problem....maybe mine was a lemon, I don't know. But my fix worked
well, as indicated by my trouble-free trip of 6000 miles and 60 hours.

Lynn,
If I use your numbers, which are not too far from mine, I've gone 12000 miles so far this year. Wow!

I've put in over 120hrs, at 100mph that's about 12000 miles. In theory anyway.

Theories are fine, Mike, but I've got the motel and fuel receipts,
and the GPS data to back mine up. : ) (No "one-upmanship"
intended...just havin' fun)
Incidentally, when I got to looking at the track of my trip, I found
that the GPS had overwritten the first part of the trip, and it
showed "in theory" that I had started out from somewhere in Arizona,
near the San Simon VOR, and that each day I fly now, more and more of
the trip track will be eaten up...unless I save the track,....which I
just did. Damn, now I'm gonna have to re-fly the first couple of
thousand miles. : ) Hey Jimmie, can I stay at your place again?
Another GPS fact that I just discovered....when the "flights" log
gets full, it starts to overwrite the earliest ones. When I went to
update my pilot's logbook, the first day of flying on this trip was
gone. Fortunately, I had written those figures down, as well as all
the rest of the trip, so it will be easy to transfer those figures to
my logbook...wouldn't want the 'net/FAA cops to bust me on that one.

I use the IQ3600a and find it works rather well, not sure on the, getting full thing. I did find that if I did a stop I needed to shut down the gps, collaps the entenna, and it will pick up where I stopped. As far as the Faa, well, what they don't know won't hurt them. In fact, the best thing to do with those folks is to be, out of side out of mind, if you know what I mean.

Okay, thanks Lynn. You fly at nearly WOT. If I do that, I am too close
to 100 MPH, which is my Vne.

Sometimes WOT won't get me to 2900 rpm, sometimes WOT will put me
into the 3000's. Sometimes when I'm flying along at 2900-2950, I'll
have a half-inch of throttle left. It just depends on the winds, I
guess, or other variables.
