Fuel pumps are much better at pushing fuel than pulling fuel. You’d think they’d be equal at this, but they aren’t. Push your hand through a pool of water. You get a great big wave ahead of your hand – water’s really moving. But behind your hand you get vortices, bubbles, and a big empty spot.
Any resistance in the suction part of the system is bad news. Pulling fuel through a filter is not a good idea because the pump is already working hard enough just getting fuel from the tanks, especially when the head-pressure is low, or even negative. Also, what happens when there’s the tiniest leak behind the pump? Ever try sucking soda through a straw that has a tiny hole in it? You’re going to go thirsty.
