|
|
One of our locals has an older Firestar, about an 1988 model, and he
recently had to repair the lower tailwheel section under the tail, the
tailwheel diagonal strut had corroded badly due to the area having no
vent holes. He is repairing it and has said that he does not intend to
recover it, but leave it open. We talked about this and it came up that
not covering it may be a poor idea inasmuch as this section probably
adds to the total vertical tail surface area, and the airplane may be
somewhat less directionally stable without this area covered.
Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of this that I can pass on to him?
Thanks
Richard Pike

Richard P,
I have read in several places that, that area of the vertical stab
under the horizontal stab is vital to spin control/recovery. I certainly do
not know if homer had that intention in creating that area, but it
theoretically has a purpose. -richard swiderski

Thanks, I passed that info on to the owner of the Firestar.

I've been flying it that way for almost 7 years now - hasn't caused a problem.
I too - didn't want to cover up what I thought might be a problem to
get to later.
Never was a problem... but never got around to covering it either. 675 hrs.
No problem. If you spin them, that's the least of your worries. These
things are
very hard to spin anyway and you couldn't do it by accident. If you
want to try,
their are plenty of things in the archives to give you spin instructions.
