I was wondering how many Kitfox owners there are in the South East and if there's any interest in some kind of gathering. I live near Greenville, SC.

I'm a fairly new pilot myself and I have to say that I'm a little disappointed to discover how few people there are in the sport. My home airport (34A) is a ghost town. The hangars are full but there are no airplanes in the tie down area. If there's ever more than one airplane on the ramp, the locals crack jokes and call it a "fly in".

And yes, I do like a little cheese with my whine.

Great. Now we just need someplace interesting to fly to that's somewhere between us. Looks like the midway point will be somewhere around the NC/VA border. Know anything interesting in that area?

Luis, I live in RDU area and just purchased my Kitfox 912 4-1200 today. The previous owner is taking it to KLBT so I can get some tail wheel training... Then I'll hanger it back at my usual home hanger 1nc1. I have a friend at the same strip thats building one. So ya, we're out here... Steve Bennett Durham NC.

How about somewhere on the coast? First Flight Airport at Kitty Hawk seems like a fitting destination. A bit south of that is Ocracoke Island (W95) which is supposed to have the best beach in the US:

Whoohoo! Lots of great suggestions. No matter what happens, it's already raised my spirits just to have this many people respond. So far, I count seven interested pilots and almost as many suggested destinations Smile. They all sound interesting but Kitty Hawk is one that really stands out for me. The thought of a flock of Kitfoxes gathering at the birthplace of aviation gets my heart pumping. What do you say guys? Shall we make it Kitty Hawk?

Hey guys I live in northwest Alabama, does that qualify for southeast fly
in, I have just finished building a 5TD with Rotec radial and hope to get it
inspected next week. I would like to join you if I get enough time on the
fox before then.

Please come! I started out addressing SE based pilots thinking that people further away would not be interested. Just to be clear, EVERYONE is welcome as far as I'm concerned.

A Rotec powered Kitfox is quite a unique specimen. It would be awsome if you could make it. What kind of timeframe are you looking at?

Holy cow! It's the infamous Lynn Matteson. There goes the neighborhood! That would be awesome Lynn.

Well it looks like we certainly have enough interest now we need to pick a place and a time. At the moment, I see two alternatives that look really interesting. Campbell Field Airport on VA's eastern and First Flight Airport at Kitty Hawk. I can go either way but I think we should pick a destination that would draw the most people. Shall we put it to a vote?

I'm personally leaning towards Kitty Hawk. Seems like the kind of pilgrimage that every pilot should take sooner or later.

As for a date: How about the first weekend of Oct? Columbus Day makes it a long weekend. Also, I got word from a couple of people who are interested but can't make it any sooner.

Oh.. I've been corresponding with Mr. John King himself and he expressed an interest in Kitty Hawk. Let's start an email campain and see if we can tear him away from that boat he's building Smile.

Yup, it's me alright...quick, hide the women and children!

My friend down there has a friend who lives nearby, right on a
private strip called Eastover...a fly-in residential park. I flew
radio controlled planes there one summer day while visiting. It is
located just under the outer ring of Fayetteville Reg'l, to the
northeast. That is where I will park the plane when I visit the
F'ville area. That aside, keep doing the planning and I'll go along
with whatever is voted upon.

Maybe we could all pitch in and finish John's boat so he'd have more
time to fly. : )

Wow. I just combed through all the replies since my original queries and we have close to a dozen pilots interested. There are a couple more that responded directly to my home email that I don’t have in front of me at the moment but here’s the first cut at a list:

Steve Bennett, Durham, NC, Sbennett3(at)aol.com
Steve Shinabery, Lake St.Marys, OH, shinco(at)bright.net
Travis, Roxboro, NC, tc9008(at)aol.com
Ray Gignac, Mitchellville, Md, kitfoxpilot(at)msn.com
Kem Dunnebacke, Bayboro, NC, kitfoxivplay(at)gmail.com
Luis Rodriguez, Greeville, SC, wingnut(at)spamarrest.com
Jim Cantrell, Hodges, Alabama, Rotec, jcant1(at)hughes.net
Lynn Matteson , Grass Lake, MI, lynnmatt(at)jps.net
Mark Napier, Atlanta, GA, Mark.Napier(at)sciatl.com
John King, Warrenton, VA, kingjohn1(at)comcast.net

As I’ve posted, I currently see two viable alternatives for a location for the gathering (please see previous post). Would everyone on the list above please chime in with their own preference? Also, would anyone that is interested that is not on the list please chime in with their email address?

We also have to pick a date. Since no one else has mentioned a firmed date yet, I’ll kick it off with suggesting Oct 8th. It’s far enough away that it will include some people that would not be able to attend otherwise while soon enough that we can start making firm commitments.

Finally, should we take this off this discussion off the Matronics list to avoid clogging the in boxes of people who are not interested?

Ken pointed out that I goofed with the date. Oct 8th is a Monday. It's Columbus day thus a holiday and why I was thinking of this particular weekend but I'm guessing that Saturday, Oct 6, will work better.
