Bill's OK. Apparently a couple of stitches, but he is up and commenting on the accident. This is off one of the news outlets
wasn't wearing a helmet, because we did not intend the bike to even move!
We were spinning the tire in soapy water. The tire unexpectantly gripped, (water ran out?) and launched the bike. I couldn't get it shut down as quickly as I would have liked. I had to release the front brake to fully untwist the throttle. I then managed to slow it down to about 20 mph.
The positive message here is that when we crunched the battery pack, NOTHING happened. No smoke. No flames. Not even sparks. Not only are these cells more powerful, they are the safest possible for automobiles.
Also, there was NO ONE in front of the bike or in the possible trajectory of the bike.
Bill Dube
So here you are seeing a true entrepreneur - taking what could be a bad situation and turning into a marketing opportunity for his product. Bill's a great guy!

Glad to hear that! That is one awesome bike. How long before something
like that motor/battery combo goes into an airplane (maybe a
self-launched glider)?? Probably a smaller motor, maybe 100-150 HP
would work for a glider. Any idea of the run time on these batteries?

Don't know what kind of batteries this glider uses, but it seems to
work well.

I'm OK, just a bit embarrassed.
They really pumped up the drama with the edits, commentary, and
pictures that they selected. It was a tense moment or two, but not as
big a deal as was it was touted to be.
What no one seems to notice is that the battery pack suffered some
damage, and likely shorted some cells, but NOTHING happened. This is
a marvelous benefit of the A123 Systems Nano-phosphate cells. Unlike
"laptop" Li-Ion cells, the Nano-phosphate cells are quite safe if you
crush them or short them out. They just sit there and hiss. In
contrast, the common laptop type cells will often shoot flames out of
the end like a road flare when shorted or crushed.
Thank you M.I.T. for inventing Nano-phosphate technology.
Obviously, I have been distracted from working on my RV-7 (and LED
position lights) by the drag bike effort.
The bike is going to get the very latest "Ultra" cells from A123
Systems in December. This will boost the bike from ~400 HP up to 1000
HP with just a bit more weight.

Have a look at the electric Sonex as well.....getting closer! The above is
just a link to an article I found.

The website says:
The Antares 20E uses SAFT VL41M Li-Ion cells, which provide very high
energy storage per weight. SAFT VL41M batteries are also used in the
RQ-4B Global Hawk, and will be built into the F35 Joint Strike Fighter
in 2007.
Pretty neat stuff!
do not archive (until these batteries are used in RVs and would
therefore be RV related)

Sonex, LTD. unveiled their electric prototype at Osh this
past summer. Wonder if
they have talked with Bill at all? They say that they have
developed their own batteries and motors...
Seems they are getting 30-40 minutes run-time, and are
aiming for 60.
