In the Fall of 1903, my late father was taking a class in physics at
Indiana University. The professor was at the blackboard explaining/
proving that a heavier-than-air machine cannot fly. When I was taking
flying lessons in '40, Dad used to warn me that what I was doing was
impossible!

I remember reading an article in an old 1930's issue of FLYING magazine, where some physicist was explaining why due to the massive amounts of power required, that flying faster than the speed of sound would be impossible.

Yes, Yes and the people that wrote the Bible also insisted that the World was flat and that the Sun and planets orbited around the Earth.
Here is the first clue: "Impossible" .... "I'm Possible"....!!!!!
Boundaries exist for the bold and questioning types to break through and disprove.
Also...never listen to people that have NOT gone up against the boundary in person and can not speak from their own experience as they know not what they speak of.

Hey, you can save us a step! Take your own advise and don't talk about things you haven't gone up against in person!
Since you didn't speak to the writers of the Bible in person and you don't know Greek or Hebrew and you apparently don't know God then you should shut your trap.
If you dont want to take your advise take mine, keep religion out of it.

Ray Ol' Buddy, who has been blowing fairy dust up your skirt? Where do you
get this stuff?
The Bible says the world is flat? Au contraire, Isaiah 40:22 says that God
is above the circle of the earth. Or in other words, the earth appears as an
orb.
In Job 26:7, it says that God hangs the earth upon nothing, and in Job
26:10, it says that the boundary between light and darkness forms a circle
or an arc across the face of the planet. Which is obviously not apparent
unless the Earth is being viewed from space, and accurately described from
that vantage point...
Never confuse what some curmudgeon says about the Bible, with what it
actually says. It didn't work for the Pharisees, and it still doesn't.
Now can we go back to arguing over Seafoam and VG's instead of embarrassing
ourselves?

Not bashing religion.....just meant to illustrate that most things are possible...
Ouch!
Even our prop tips can break the sound barrier...I wonder if they never experienced that before the sound barrier was actually broken by an aircraft?
Probably something they just did not recognize at the time.

Ray, if you've ever heard a T-6 take off you've heard a prop tip going supersonic. I'm told the TU-95 Bear does the same and the racket from 8 props and 32 prop tips is amazing.
And then there's the story that a pilot at Muroc in an F-86 nosed over into a dive and a shallow boom was heard in the valley below on or about October 10, 1947. Even if it happened, Yeager was the first guy to do it in level flight, so he gets the credit.

Hi,
I dont want to start a religious war but this rather pointless exchange
reminded me of the story of a well known astronomer who, after giving a
lecture about the creation of the earth was accosted by a lady who said "
You are quite wrong you know. The Earth is supported on the back of an
elephant which is standing on a turtle"
"Oh really," replied the astonomer, humouring the old lady "In that case
what is the turtle standing on.". "Oh you can`t catch me out like that "
said the lady "Its just turtles, all the way down"
Cheers

Good one, Pat. I thought this VG topic was becoming a religion, glad there's some humor in it, too. And lest any of Ye smiteth me, I do know how to use the delete key and do quite often. Pat generally puts a nice Brit spin, like the Monty Python reference, on things.
Turtles, all the way down. Great.

Somehow I think back to the interview of the little old lady down in Mississippi , back in the 1950's , during a rash of UFO spottings...The reporter asked how she knew it was a UFO; to which she replied....why sonny! it had UFo written on the side of it!!! Herb

Gene Z and other participants in this conversation:
Well, you all could take this conversation back copy.
I think you have enough participants to start a new email List.
Seems to have drifted away for Kolb aircraft. For that matter, has even drifted away for VG's and as far East as Great Brittain.
Would like to emphasize I am posting this one with kindness in my heart, trying to be as gentle as I can not to hurt anyones feelings or stir up a sh_t storm.
Thanks for being considerate to the remaining couple hundred other Kolb Listers,

Hi Pat. I've kinda gotten out of the habit of the List lately. Very
busy at work with new owners, re-modeling, the end of the fiscal year on
Oct 1, and not out of the woods yet.
How about you ?? Is the weather still good enuf for the cottage ??
Hope so, that looks like a nice way to spend a weekend.
I've been more active lately on the weekends and have been doing quite a
bit of climbing and hiking. Take a look at my new blog at:
www.gogittum.com/blog New Mexico is a great place to

Hi Lar,
looked up your blog. you are really enjoying yourself. I think if I ever had
the urge to climb some of the stuff you have been tackling I should go and
lie down until the urge passes.
Nice to be reminded of Santa Fe and how much we enjoyed being with you last
year after MV. Espececially reminded by some of the Indian jewelery. Those
girls selling the wares in the main square really know their stuff.. I
showed one of them a silver belt buckle with a nice stone and a bear claw
which I had bought in a small town up near Durango and she told me what mine
the stone had come from. She about confirmed all the things which the owner
of the store had told me about the buckle during his sales pitch..
We have had quite a nice Indian Summer and we went to our cottage at
Appledore last weekend. Spring tides and the estuary was full and there was
some catamaran racing going on. As they tack just below our garden wall it
is quite exciting.
Wendy and I bought each other electric bicyles for our birthdays in August.
They fold and we took them to the cottage with us as there isa disused
railway line which has been paved for the use of walkers and cyclists. Of
course it is level and makes for good cycling. The track runs aong the side
of the estuary with lots of water birds, egrets, duck, stoneturns, dunlin
etc.
The bikes are good. If you dont pedal then you get no help from the motor so
there is some exercise involved. There are six gears and maximum legal speed
is 18 mph. The battery lasts about 20 miles or so depending on how much
effort you put in and that is as long as I intend to sit on a bicycle
saddle anyway.
I managed to fall off during a test ride. The bike has 16" wheels and I ran
off the edge of a concrete drive onto the dirt road and lost my balance.
This raised a lump on my shin about as big as a hens egg and turned my legs
technicolor and I was a bit shook up. Added to that I had a professional
company come to weigh the Kolb and I put my back out lifting the tail to
put the scales under. That put me more or less out of action for a week.
Still it was an interesting exercise as the guy who weighed the plane was
weighing the Vulcan, a big bat winged bomber designed to carry an atom bomb
only the day before. This is the bomber with which we bombed Port Stanley
airfield in the Falklands. The Vulcan was due to be scrapped about 2 weeks
after the Falklands show started. If the Argies had left it 6 months later
we would have had no planes able to reach them. A bunch of volunteers is
trying to get one of them back into flying order. A hell of a tall order but
with luck they hope to have her on the show circuit next summer.
Keep in touch
Pat. (love from Wendy)
