Nutplate Corrosion - To Prime or Not To Prime?

I'm in the process of installing the nut plates onto my spar and am
seeking other builders thoughts re priming of the nut plates once
installed to inhibit the likelihood of future corrosion.

I am using Duralac on each nut plate prior to riveting to inhibit
corrosion due to dissimilar metal contact and I have primed the
countersinks in the spar flange prior to installing the nut plates.
Should I also prime the nut plates themselves once installed on the
underside of the spar flanges?

Your thoughts, experiences and suggestions would be very much
appreciated please.
Regards

We prime all nutplates, either with the same primer as we use for the skins
or with Zinc Chromate. I doubt much of that paint would be left after
running the screw in, but what do I know? We haven't been using anything on
the threads of the screws, but would be interested in others' suggestions on
this. We use Lithium Grease on all bolt shafts, but make sure not to get
any on the threads.

Do not archive.

I use anti-sieze on my screws and really don't worry about getting it on
the larger bolt threads either. I guess Jesse, being a purist, is
worried about the changes in assembly torque on bolts with lubricated
threads. I'm not. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of the
changes (or possible consequences) and follow my lead. It's just the
way I've done it, and yes, sooner or later I may get 'caught' by my
blasphemous assembly. I rather feel I'll croak from natural causes
first. Oh, BTW, the reason I use antisieze is because I'm not fond of
having to drill out a few screws once a year!

Anti-sieze, from what I have read, is made to be used on the threads. We
use that or Seal Lube for the threads of the fuel and brake line pipe thread
fittings. I just don't like the idea of lithium grease on the nut for fear
it might limit the effect of the nyloc action. Anti-sieze I would not be
against, and certainly not into a nutplate. I do agree that using ez-outs
or drilling a screw is a pain.

I do think that's the first time I've been called a purist, for whatever
reasons, so couldn't you have left that in the archives?

So, for another question...does the server recognize the previous messages
and remove them from the post online and thus ignore the "do not archive"
post from previous messages?

Patrick,
I would agree that the nutplates need something for long term corrosion protection. I noticed someone mentioned Lithium Grease. I used to use Lithium Grease on everything on my house on Kauai until I discovered (to my horror) that the salt air was actually condensing on it and slowly embedding salt crystals into it. I actually had well greased metal rusting underneath the grease. The crystals had worked their way down to the metal.
Priming nutplates probably won't do much good, since the screws and other activity around them will probably do a good job of removing it.
I would suggest Boeshield T-9. It's similar to ACF-50 but it has a waxy consistency. There is a similar product that I'm pleased with for the regular market called Bullfrog Rust Inhibitor. I've never looked into it but I wouldn't be surprised if the Bullfrog product is simply Boeshield T-9.
On the threads, I agree with the others that they need to be clean of any lubricant that might help them back off. Locktite works great.
John

Try soaking the screws after spraying them with LPS3 in a paper cup
before insertion into the nutplates.
