I flew up from Tampa for the Evergreen (Alabama) EAA SERFI fly-in on Saturday. There was a nice turnout of about 30 RV's, and about 200 planes total. Not many drive-ins from the local area however.
The organization of the event left alot to be desired. We arrived at 9:45 AM only to find that the pancake breakfast was over and done with. The only other food vendor was some greasy sausage trailer. Ugh! After a long flight we were also looking forward to a port-a-potty, only to find after much searching around, there were only 3 on the field. Nobody seemed to be in charge nor was there any information booth set up. Those with officials tags around their necks were clueless where things were and knew nothing about the event.
When it came time to leave I went to the FBO to inquire about fuel. It seems they parked all the static display planes around the fuel farm, leaving no access to the pumps. So I was told they had a 250 gallon truck that was fueling planes, but obviously the driver had to go back to the pumps to refill his truck, about every 5 planes. The FBO had no radio to the fuel truck, so the procedure I was told was to chase the driver down. After walking all over the grounds, I couldn't see or find the fuel truck. Apparently the driver was "taking a break". 1 hour later I found him and asked for fuel. He told me he'd put me on the list.........and I was number 25 in line.........about a 2 1/2 hour wait. I told him to forget it.........left Evergreen and fueled up elsewhere.
Needless to say I left with a bad taste in my mouth for the Evergreen Fly-in. I'll never go back. Should have gone to Thomasville instead. You'd think that with one weekend each year to showcase their airport, that they'd do a much better job of organizing things. Not to mention making some money.

Trust me when I say these types of issues have been going there for quite some time. Three years ago I spoke to an official about not being able to get fuel, and he said "we are not here to fuel planes, and if you want gas you should go someplace else." Needless to say I could not believe what I was hearing. The real probem was for a few guys who were in planes that were day VFR only and were not going to be able to get gas and get home before dark. Add to all this the fact that this reginal flyin has gone down hill for the past few years. There is one saving grace in all of this, and that would be the Thomasville, GA flyin that occurs the same weekend. The Thomasville flyin has been going on for about 30 years, long before Evergreen. This past weekend Thomasville had about 500 planes, 30 or so RV's, and was well oganized with lots of volunteers. It is not an air show, but a huge meet and greet for like mind people who love aviation. Next year do yourself a favor and come to south Georgia, we would love to see you.

My experience at Evergreen (the airport, not just the flyin) is that you
probably should be glad you couldn't get fuel there. They typically
have the most expensive fuel in the area.
I got disillusioned with the flyin about a dozen years ago when they
started trying to charge day-visitors (not campers) who flew in in
homebuilts $10 per person.

Garry,
Yes you should have gone to Thomasville for a near perfect fly-in. They had over 300 aircraft register which means they probably had many more that didn't register. There was also a lot of Rvs there as we listed it as the Oct. fly-out for the FL. Wing of VAF.
