Well, I never thought the day would come but here it is...the 914 arrived on Friday and I had it hung on Saturday. It is a beauty thats for sure! One problem...I was shorted the turbo control unit! When you fork over this kind of cash, you hope that everything is there. I called the company I bought it from and they are working on getting it for me so its not a big problem but it kind of kills the excitement a bit. Now that the engine is hung, I am moving into the electric install and panel so anyone who wants to drop by to help out (electrical systems scare me) is more than welcome.

The Airmaster electric CS prop is also on its way, Hopefully I will be flying come late spring.

For those of you who start to covet or get jealous...keep in mind I have to pay for this and you jealousy will probably leave you fairly quickly. However, the performance is amazing with the 914 so that will make up for it in my mind.

I thought you were just competing with someone for the "Most Expensive Kitfox" award. I hope it has a full glass panel, anything else just wouldn't be right. Wink
I also hope you have Bob Nucholl's book on electrics, ( www.aeroelectric .com,) it's immensely helpful. Just make sure you read the whole book BEFORE you start. (Not like I did.) Then you'll get the design right from the start and avoid a bunch of problems later.

Darrin:

If you are installing an electrically complicated system in your plane do yourself a favour. Make an interconnect block diagram of your installations before you start with the side cuts. Then as you go through he installation make sure you make updates to your drawings of any changes you may make. This will make future troubleshooting and upgrades a lot easier not to mention a smoother installation in the first place.

Be sure to keep a copy of the interconnect diagram in the technical log and your build log.

I don't think I am even in the top 10 most expensive Kitfoxes, and if I was, that is not my intent. I just want an airplane that will do what I want it to do and here in Utah and Idaho, we often get DA's of over 11k feet with a 912 I would be limited to flying the valleys in many places. Besides, there are several on the list with 914's and at least one I know of that has a 914 and amphibs! Keep in mind, I paid nearly much less for my kit than a new Series 7 so I will be in it the same as someone who bought a new kit and installed a 912s (otherwise, the 914 would not have been an option). For the panel, I am going with a D100 with backup 2 1/4" ASI and Altimeter, Avmap EKP-IV, and GRT EIS. The EIS is definately more expensive than dial gauges but if you add up all the instruments the D100 replaces, it is basically a wash (actually much cheaper if you went with high end instruments).

See, you are already scaring me with your talk of diagrams and such! Actually, I do have Bob's book and am not too intimidated by the electrical system. My engineering firm has a sister electrical company that does all our controls, SCADA and Telemetry and there are a couple brilliant sparkies that I can utilize.

I can't speak for the 912, but the 912S performs well at altitude for
a normally-aspirated engine. My Model IV-1200 Speedster was equipped
with a 912S and Ivo medium prop. I took it to 17,500 feet (density
altitude that day was 19,200) and it was still climbing 300 feet per
minute (measured, not indicated). It was weighed down with me (200
lbs) and 3/4 tanks of fuel. Mind you, after leveling off the cruise
performance was pretty underwhelming.

That said, I'd dearly love to see a turbo-normalized 912S on the
front of my new 'fox some day...
