Hi Paul
I will try to send you a photo of my panel that has the compass installed. Yes , I know, when you put the compass in the panel that electrical currents can cause problems. When I turn the power onto the panel, I get about a 1/2 degree change and I should be able to trim that out although in the day of gps who follows a compass that close?

Oh, oh. I have evidently erased it from the disk. It is a cheepo Falcon made in China with a 2 inch face. It is lighted. If you are interested, I can take another photo.

Paul,
As shown on the attached photo, I have Sirs Navigation's NV2C-12V compass
mounted on the windshield, at top centre (comes with sticky pad).
(The black stick protruding down next to the compass is not part of it -
it's the antenna for the traffic warning system)
Regards,
Svein

Paul,
Ref. my reply with photo just posted on the forum: The compass does not
obstruct the view of the pilot as it may look in the photo - it's just the
camera angle that places it at such an apparently prominent location.

Svein

I mounted my standby compass at the very front of the overhead panel
where it meets the windscreen. This avoids most stray electric currents
and does not obstruct vision. As it is a standby it doesn't matter so
much that it is not so easy to include in the scan. However
conventional compasses in that position suffer from paralllax error and
in any case small conventional compasses are often difficult to read
due to turbulence. For these reasons I used a digital fluxgate compass
which I use as a reference to set my DI. As it happens it is also
possible to use a fluxgate drive for a uEncoder so I have another
fluxgate mounted in the rear fuselage. There are sometimes a few
degrees difference between the two so I use an average when setting the
DI. Another advantage is that swinging fluxgate compasses is far easier
and quicker than the convention type.
As most of us use GPS's it is possible to treat the DI as a back up
and fly GPS track. An updated DI will then give an idea of drift and
can be applied should the GPS fail.

Quote: | Hi Paul,
See my set up for a vertical card compass http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/vertcard_compass1.php in photo below. It is supported on an aluminum plate which is secured to the cabin top frame. You will also need the mounting bracket http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/vertcard_compass2.php Anyway, it works for me and I did not have to apply any compensation. Vertical card compasses are worth the extra money in my opinion since they are a bit easier to read than the standard 'whiskey' design. (See the blurb.)
Chinese 'copy' compasses are available from Falcon gauge but I preferred to spend the extra for the original. Please contact if you have any questions.
Cheers, John

My compass is mounted in the same place. Only difference is that I'm
using a TSO'd vertical card...

Hi Paul,
I mounted a vertical card compass in the small part of the panel just
above the panel cutout for the mono-wheel landing gear lever. I have
had no problem with electrical/magnetic interference in that location.
As someone else already mentioned, there is a very slight variation
between master power off and on, but all compasses should be 'swung'
with power on.

Many thanks to all responders with both descriptions and photos -
lovely looking aircraft. We'll plump for one.
Thanks again
