Bradley sez:

...read your post again. To the uninitiated, it sounds as though you
knew the conditions were marginal, and because of your having such a
useful instrument, you chose to make the flight, maybe assuming that
IF things went wrong, your fantastic quasi-wanna-be IFR panel would
be put to good use.

I think you are the only one that read such things into his message,
Bradley, he said nothing of the kind (yes--I've read it three times
now). He was quite clear that he used the capabilities of his
equipment as a way to exit a bad situation, not an excuse to enter it
in the first place.

Capabilities? Of the Garmin 196? It has no capabilities for IFR flight. No
pure GPS does. By the time it registers a change, it is too late to correct.

Folks, the ONLY point I was making was that GPS derived instrumentation will
not work for IFR flight. It does not update fast enough, the required flight
control inputs are too fine, and the GPS does not have the resolution or
accuracy to maintain flight solely by its reference. Many companies have
tried it, and found it lacking far behind gyro driven instruments. Why
Garmin even offers it is a mystery to me.

Gary: I apologize. I obviously misread or misunderstood what you intended to
say.

If anyone disagrees, so be it. I'll have to live with that.

Let's move on.
