Hi Bill,
I believe Zenith sells a 601 to 0-200 standard mount that Stratus has
bolt on adapters using
Lyc dampers # 71032. Zenith also does a cowl that works for the Stratus
powered 601.

Larry, In all the pictures I've seen it looks there are modifications
needed to the standard cowl to fit a soob. Is this true? Is this
fiberglass work? There are lots of pictures with odd bumps and modified
openings, but I've never seen a description of what is really required
to put a cowling on a soob. Do you know if the same cowl would fit
either are RAM or Stratus - I assume it depends on the geometry of the
PSRU?

Ron

Hi Ron,
You'd be right about modifications, but the bumps are provided with the
cowl so you can place them as you
put the cowl over the engine. The images on the cowling page link
pretty much show the process I went thru.
Not difficult, but certainly workable.
I doubt the RAM engine is going to be exactly the same, but it would be
close. His might have another mount
arrangement. The RAM engine has a gear reduction. I prefer belt for
ease of inspection and ease of repair.
Check out the link pages I've provided and click on pictures to get
larger views of what's needed. I've got a
couple of pages on fiberglass if you've not worked with it before. Not
difficult once you work thru a piece
or two. I use polyester resin type in lieu of epoxies. Much cheaper and
it will hold up well. Certainly easier to
repair.
The geometry of the re-drive and mount bracketing that fits the Subaru
would be key here. RAM does excellent
work and has very good product. I went with Stratus because I liked the
dual Bing carburation, belt drive and the
arrangement of the engine accessories.

Hi Ron,and Larry, just like to add a couple of foot notes Ram makes a engine
mount for a 601 and I know that , the " Big Z "sells a Jab. cowling that fit
over the Ram engine, It is very streamline with a long narrow look, and
requires a little triming and alot of sanding. If you go to www.rayair.com
you can click on the video of the orange and white 601XL taxieing and flying
it has the Jab.. cowling that I'am talking about, that's my plane. It had a
"Harley" engine in it then , and now it has a Ram/130 ,same cowling .Ram
also has a new redrive that he developed that 's super fine.I think the
reason Ram uses the gear re -drive is because of the H.P. He makes a
100,130,140, and a 250 H.P super charged all E-81 engines .The geared
redrive is for the upper H.P. engines and being that he's knowes it will
hold up on the upper H.P. he uses on the 100. If you want to take a look the
web is info(at)ramengines.com Thank's Joe N101HD 601XL/RAM

Cool, I take it you like the RAM. Both the RAM and Stratus look like
good options to me. And it's nice to have options.
I found the the pictures and videos at http://www.skyray.us. Nice
looking plane. Seeing all these completions flying is a real
inspiration.
