Listers',

  

      Does anyone know of a good place and/or person available to help me transition from "Nosedrager" to "Taildrager"?  I'm due for my BFR and would like to use that training to accomplish it.  With all the 'Hubbub' about the Nose Wheel Situation, I'd like to have that option; since I'm at that point in my 6(A) construction. I'm also considering purchasing a Taildrager, so suggestions are well received and most welcome. Thanks.

I did my tail wheel transition training with Jan Bussell E 6nbsp; He owns a 6 and a 6A and is in Okechobee C Fl E 6nbsp; I was very happy with Jan and believe it would have been impossible to have flown my RV6 without his expert help E 6nbsp; The insurance co E wanted 10 hours in make and model and we did my BFR E 6nbsp; Jan 7s 6nbsp;email address is:  6nbsp;janjoyce(at)strato Enet

 I would also enthusiastically recommend Jan Bussell as an excellent instructor. I did a combined biennial check and transition to a -6A with him. My first flight in my -6A was almost a non event.

Sounds like you can build either a 6 or 6A?  I  can't advise as to where to get tailwheel instruction, but do have an opinion on  the choice between the two.

  

 I've got over a hundred hours in tailwheels (mostly a  J-3, but also Aeronca and Decathlon).  Nevertheless when I started looking  for a small two-place certificated plane to buy a few years ago I never  seriously considered a tailwheel airplane.  I wanted to fly cross-country,  and knew that after several hours of being bounced around in hot, lumpy air, the  last thing I wanted to try was landing a tailwheel in a 10- to 15-knot  cross-wind somewhere.  I ended up getting an Aircoupe which I still have  while I start building a -9A.

  

 By no means am I dissing tailwheel aircraft.  I'm  just saying for me, as much as I enjoyed my time in the Cub and others, I knew I  was not a hot-shot pilot and wanted the greater ease of a trike-gear  plane.  So I would urge you to get the tailwheel instruction and keep  flying one for a while, then make a realistic decision for you and your expected  flying trips.

Thanks, Ralph.  I also question the idea of a Tail wheel plane as an intermediate during my 6A construction.  I found a Biplane that seems to 'scratch my itch' which is a tailwheel, and I'm curious to see how much of a challenge it might present.  I guess that'll be answered during training.

      Actually , I haven't as of yet.  It's not so much about the cost as it is about the confident enjoyment received once it's complete.  Kinda' like manual vs automatic transmission.  Do I want to "Work-it" or just watch it work? (If ya know what I mean).

                I live in San Luis Obispo, CA (SBP) and received my TW instruction from an excellent pilot (Southwest, Gulfstream G550, Pitts). The training I received is in his Citabria which was a very good surrogate for my RV-4. If you want more information or contact instruction please email me off list.

I was wondering where you were. If you are here in SoCal go to Sunrise at KSNA and check out Ron Rapp. He is a good instructor. He got me flying my 6. He is active on the SoCal Yahoo group list. I was able to get him to come over to KCCB to teach me in my 6 after I got signed off by him at KSNA (insurance requirement). For the record I love my 6. Sure the TW requires more attention at the end of a long flight but it aint as bad as I thought and I LOVE IT!

There is nothing wrong with the above statement, and I fully agree 

with his logic, but on the other hand...



I feel very confident that I can take off or land my RV6 just as well 

as I can with any nose-wheel aircraft. After a long cross-county, 

being bounced around and needing fuel I landed at Dodge City KS one 

day with 28 KTs crosswind, gusting to 38!!



I flew into an airport yesterday, the runway was 20 feet wide, 2000 

feet long,  50 foot trees both ends, uphill both ways, the middle of 

the runway is on the top of a hill and the runway does a 20 degree 

dogleg.  It was not a smooth runway and all I keep thinking, if I was 

in a nose-wheel airplane and if I went off the edge of the runway, I 

would surely flip, as the former owner of the airport has 

demonstrated.  And by the way, there was a crosswind!



My point, build the airplane you want, forget the "mine is better 

than yours" syndrome, if you know what you are doing and fly 

precisely then a tail-wheel aircraft is doable if that is what you 

desire to fly.



Flying tail-draggers is it easy or hard? That concept only exists in 

the mind of the pilot. Henry Ford said it best  "If you think you 

can....or think you can't...you are right!
