I went to go flying last Sunday in my Yak 52 and immediately after starting noticed I had no indicated oil pressure. I waited a couple of minutes to see if it would come up but it never did so I shut her down. Preflight oil check had indicated 10 liters of oil. Next I looked carefully at the oil pressure gauge as I turned the power on and off and noticed the needle did move as the instrument came alive. I tried restarting and noticed the oil pressure was actually into the small yellow range on the dial but it normally is way at the top of the green. I shut her down again and put her away not knowing what to do next. After leaving I realized I should have tried starting from the real cockpit and checked the pressure on the rear gauge.
I would appreciate some advice on how to diagnose this problem without damaging the engine. The previous flight was about three weeks ago and I did not notice any problem at that time. The only time I have ever noticed any lack of indicated pressure is immediately after changing the oil when it takes 10 seconds or so for the pressure to come up. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Steve what is your pre-heat procedure? I also notice at times very low oil pressure if starting without preheating the oil, I think the pump cavitate's trying to push the thick oil and I've been told that it can damage the oil cooler. I use electric heating pads and red dragon to pre-heat. Try warming it up and see if that solves your problem.

Hi Steve,

I have seen this happen when the oil was very cold and also after an oil change as you mentioned.

If cold isn't the issue, you may want to try to pouring a couple qt of oil down into the engine to help "prime" the pump. There is a cap (about 2" diameter) plumbed into the brown oil vent line on the top of the engine in front of the generator (right behind the #1 cylinder). Pour the oil in there and see if the pressure comes up.

I couldn't get oil pressure once after an oil change (I'd let the oil drain for a week) and Cliff Coy suggested this to me. Worked perfect.

Cheers,
Steve Dalton

Head pressure is an important issue. For example, when installing a fresh
engine it usually requires about 14 liters of oil on the dip stick to prime
the oil pump. I also agree with Steve Dalton. You want to make sure the
oil is warm and pouring a couple of liters into the engine could help the
situation. After sitting for 3 weeks, it may just be a cavitation issue.
Before filling the oil tank to say, 14 liters, be sure your sump in drained
because you may have 4-5 liters in the sump that has drained down. That 4-5
liters could be a problem with 14 liters reading on the dip stick.

Lastly, the pressure relief spring on the oil pressure relief valve in the
oil pump may have failed.
