				I changed the subject line.

Here in Buffalo, NY we are now in the 20s(F) at night and will probably see zero F by early January. We installed a Reiff pre-heating system on our 912UL two years ago. It works wonders. It has two elements. One element is a fairly low wattage (50-75 watts or so) and is bonded to the bottom of the crankcase and runs continuously while plugged in. The other is a higher wattage but is thermostatically controlled and mounted on the oil tank. It cycles off when the oil tank temperature reaches 150F.

Even in the coldest temperatures here in February, the case temperature never drops below about 65F, usually around 70F. Upon starting, the CHT and Oil Temperatures read around 70F immediately and the warm up period (to 120F oil temp) is dramatically shortened.

Here is a link to their website. Not exactly cheap but well worth the investment north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

When I lived in Labrador a block heater was almost mandatory. I say almost
because I knew one guy who refused to use one... He drove a company car for
 Scully Mines.

Now I live on the island portion of the province and though we do have some
cold weather (maybe 10 -15 days a year with bitter cold weather) I find it
hardly worth the bother of plugging in. Usually I start the car, a Subaru
Imprezza, and let it warm up for a minute or so before putting it in gear.
Then for the first five minutes, until the engine has warmed enough to put
the temp gauge into the green, I won't allow the engine to turn more than
2000rpm. My personal rule of thumb is to never draw power from a cold
 engine.

Here is a web site comparing the top high quality automotive oil
filters. It does nothing to compare them to the approved Rotax filter
but it is interesting, and clearly there is a big difference between
these high end filters and the cheap ones. I bought a K&N 1002 (not
listed on the K&N web site but available at the local car parts
store?!?) and it appears to be heavy duty with a no nonsense
construction and more filter than the Rotax filter. I see no reason
not to use it. It is not a money saver, but convenient, and it could
be even better than the Rotax filter.

				Sorry for a late reply.
I believe what I practiced in Alaska could be helpful to the discussion of
oil filters, oil viscosity, and preheating in cold weather.
For airplanes in general, I would use a cowl blanket and cover the engine
cowl well. Then insert an electric heater that had a fan low into the engine
compartment and preheat the engine one hour for every ten degrees below
twenty degrees F. If it was 30 degrees below F, I would preheat for five
hours. You have to make sure the oil pan is heated. If that was difficult,
some airplane owners attached an oil pan heater to the bottom of the oil
 pan.
We would also place a electric heater with fan in the cockpit to warm up the
 radios and instruments.

With cars, we used electric engine block heaters, oil pan heaters, battery
blankets, trickle chargers for the same amount of time.

I just installed a "spin-on" oil filter kit on a new CubCrafter Sport Cub w\ O-200 IAW their required Service Instructions.

They included the filter to be used..... a small K&N.

Sorry I don't have the P\N handy, but it was the same size as the little Rotax filter I have on my 912UL.

I will get the P\N if anyone is interested. I have no idea at this time what thread size it was, etc... Just that it was a K&N product. It had the hex end for a wrench, and was drilled for safety wiring.

It is a good chance the K&N filter is a hp-1002. I use this filter on my
O-290 which has a spin on oil filter kit.

After reading all the good stuff about oil filters, I ordered 6 PL10241 from Amazon at 2 for $11.50 or so. Found they do not fit on a Kitfox S-7. The Exhaust Manifold is too close for the 3.3" height. About 3.1" height would be ok. I don't want to loosen the manifold each time I change the oil so I am looking again. I am currently using the Challenger cp9124 and managed to sell the PL's to a friend with a 914uls.
