I have a late model Jabiru 3300 engine which is producing a loud
alternator whine through my Val Com 760 radio. I've researched the
archives and have tried a 22000uf, computer grade (nut terminals)
capacitor but it's made little difference. I connected the positive
terminal of the capacitor to the same place my feed wires (red &
yellow) from the regulator attach to the positive battery terminal on
my starter contactor. I ran the negative to ground. Very little
difference. The noise is so loud it very annoying. I can disconnect
the red & yellow wires from the hot side of the starter contactor and
it is dead quiet so am pretty sure the whine (increases in pitch with
rpm) is from the alternator.
I am out of ideas. What am I missing (other that a good radio)? Is
there another radio noise filter that I should be using?
Has anyone tried the SMOOTHIE BRICKWALL
NOISE FILTER from Spruce?

Hey Jim, go to Radio Shack and get a noise suppresser. Put it on the power
input as close as possible to the radio. Fixed mine.

If you folks go to a good boat parts supply house and check out Newmar Noise Filters, they are 10 amps and will cover most electronics, very reasonable.
Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.

I called Pete first. He has been very attentive but said this isn't
a problem area for Jabiru aircraft and is unfamiliar with what to
suggest. Another person suggested a radio filter. He said it worked
for him with the same radio. I going to try to run my radio with
another battery I have as a spare with a direct hookup and see what
happens. Thanks for the response. Jim

Thanks Larry. Mark Sherman sent me this information. Thought I
would post it for the list:
I did some looking at Radio Shacks web site and found
that they have discontinued the noise filter 270-051
with no replacement part.
I found the same part at Parts Express
(www.partsexpress.com) under the part number 265-042.

I took my plane to Sarasota avionics to see what the experts say. By the way Sarasota avionics is a great shop if you need someone FAA certified to look at the plane, They are like Zenithair, fantastic customer service. Since I know enough to be very dangerous on electronics, they wired my plane up when I built it. What they have found is that the noise is an egnition noise from the two white wires leading from the alternator. I am going to look at the niose suppressors you guys recommend since we are all tending to see this problem.
It is interesting Pete at Jabiru took that stance on the noise, a "not my problem" stance. If some one has a solution or even a band aid, it would benefit for him to mention it.

I have the 3300 but have not run it yet. I did have a 2200 on another
airplane and it also had the noise.
After much research and talking to HAM operators, the suggestion was to be
sure the wires are the insulated (grounded shield) type. I rewired the
whole instrument panel and had the noise still. Then, one day a radio
expert told me to ground only one end of the shield on the wires. I did.
It solved my radio noise completely. Apparently if the shielded wire is
grounded on both ends you create a "loop" and the radio picks up the noise
just as it does with a non shielded wire.
On my new 3300 I ve run shielded wires EVERYWHERE.. Hopping I dont get the
problem...

This is why Pete will tell you to ground the carby to the engine or a common ground (make sure engine is grounded). The cables running to carby for throttle and choke (starting circuit) can act as loops as the carby is mounted on a rubber tube/sleeve.
Might not solve everyones problem but worth a try.

Juan--
Before you try suppressors, you might want to try and shield the white wires. Even some aluminum foil wrapped around them will help identify specifically if this is the issue. If it is the answers ,permanent shielding is available.
