When I built my S5 (1st flight May 2000) I chose to  cover the console top side with Cordura fabric to match the seats.  My  biggest reason for using fabric was to cover up all of the rivets that would  have been visible had I painted it.  I used spray on 3M adhesive and it  held up for about three years and since then it has gradually worked loose and  looked unsightly so I removed it.  Now I need to recover with  something.  

 What have some of you used to cover your console  that has lasted?  I'm just looking for alternatives to what I've already  tried and didn't work very well.  Vinyl contact paper was suggested, but I  don't know where to find something suitable and of course, color would be a  limiting factor.

 Any suggestions out there?

Have you considered screw down snaps like for boat covers, etc.  A little more weight but would probably need half doz. or less.

Deke,  

I used nagahide on my fox panel top. I had a bead sown in along the front edge of the top and glued in place. I still looks great after 10 year and that includes 4 years in the summer sun at high altitude.

Contact paper is in the housewares dept of WalMart, Target etc. Its worth a try because the cost in minimal.

I used some black thin carpet that is used in RV's.  It is great and have a lot extra, contact me off line.  Clint

Deke, I used the light weight carpet that came with my interior kit.  12 years later it is still in place, held by spray-on adhesive.

Deke,

  I got my carpet for my mod.II at Home depot. I believe it was called  "fish and ski" for boats. Although it is very thin backed it is quite tough. The  thin backing and very low pile makes bends easily. I got mine in black, although  I don't know if other colors are available. The one pitfall I do recall however  is the fact that they only sell it by the roll length yard. Meaning, narrowest  available would be 3 ft.x the length of the roll(10ft.?).

Thanks John.  I didn't receive any extra carpet with my kit, but I  might be able to find something suitable in a fabric shop.  I'm thinking  that when I first applied the adhesive, I didn't get  enough on the fabric  to make a good bond.

 Something a little different to ponder, I primed my  glare shield and then shot it with Fleck paint to give it a textured finish then  shot it with a satin black paint, the textured finish helps on glare and also  hides any imperfections in the glass. I setup my shield so it intersects the  bars in the center of the windscreen where they come together so all that was  needed was a slot in the glare shield to install. Leading edge will receive a  rubber edge molding. Great glare reduction, min weight, slot behind the bars can  be covered with a velcro installed patch.

It's probably 3/16" Nylaflow, with Poly-Flo fittings, available at 

Aircraft Spruce. (PN 05-00110, $0.19/ft.) They also sell 1/8 and 1/4 

so you'll have to check.

The "slot behind the bars" can also be opened up and used for a  

defroster opening...that's what I did.

I have my panel painted.. The guy who built the plane did it that way to help keep it light but if I had it to do again that’s what I would do.    

   

On the other hand I was thinking that if you really wanted to hide the screws, rivets etc. There are two handy things you could use.  The first is the same cloth you used on the plane.  Glue it around the edge, instruments etc., and shrink it.  Then finish it with latex paint.  Another idea I have is to use soundproofing wall foam.  It is similar to wall paper, which also could be used, but has about 1/8” of foam on the back.  That stuff should be available in a nice wood grain.  Finally the cheapest idea I have would be to use a piece of cushion floor or linoleum.  You can even get that stuff to look like marble if that’s what you want.
