Does anyone use or have tried using an automotive roof luggage pod mounted under the landing gear? Would appreciate hearing about your experience/suggestions.
Thanks,
larry

Nothing more than looking at them and thinking: If I was to install
that on my Kitfox, I would do it the aerodynamically correct way; the
blunt end first.

Good point Michel. I've always wondered why they mount those things
backward. I thought the same thing about sailboats too. Seems the pointy
end should be facing aft.

Well it depends on what you're trying to do. On a car they're trying
to make it look sleek, of course, but they also have to kill lift as
best they can or the top will rip right off, or the whole thing will
rip off the car. I suspect you'd have the same problem on the Kitfox
and would want to mount it the way it's mounted on the car. The
latches aren't really designed to take much load and you'd have to
come up with a different closure to mount it upside down.

Boats have a slightly different problem, Deke; the move at the border of two medium, air and water. When sailing close to the wind, waves meeting the bow have enough energy to put the boat to a near halt. But larger vessels that then meet 'smaller waves' often have today a so-called bulbous bow, which is more hydro-dynamic. The 'perfect' submarine would be shaped like an egg with the blunt side forward, and ending in a tail that would be nine times the length of the egg. At least, that what I read when I was designing yachts. Note that all modern sailboats have a keel with a NACA profile. Even the rudder is often using such a profile. So, there isn't so much difference between the air and the water but ... the waves present a different challenge. The best hull - not for speed but for a pleasant sea motion - is a symetrical hull with the bow slighly rounded ... which is how my sailboat is! It is based on the traditional Colin Archer type of symetrical hull but it has a modern fin keel with NACA profile. The best of tradition and modern technology. But it won't go as fast as those modern racers that look more like a houswife iron with a wide and flat end. That's the only way to exceed the so-called displacement speed and ease the pulling of the stern wave. But those hulls are potentially dangerous since once upside down, they won't rightene easily, being buoyant stable with the mast pointing down. The sailboat type I have, however, will do a 360 knockdown with no problem at all. In fact one of them even did a pitchpole, i.e. went around over the bow.
At sea just like in the air, it's all a question of compromising; a fast craft vs. a safe craft.
Cheers,
Michel Verheughe

Actually, Michel. I was only kidding about the sailboats and I should have
put one of those little smiley thing in there, but thanks for the
explanation anyway. Very interesting.

With a Sears luggage pod pointed either way, I’m not sure what would happen to your aircraft’s center of pressure. But I imagine it would be far from a neutral change. The aircraft baggage pods I recall seeing have been the bullet-nose-and-tail design - there might be a good reason for that shape.

That shape keeps a high pressure area on the top of the Pod so it won’t tear the top off your car or cause you to become airborne.
If mounted upside down on the belly of the plane I would expect it to carry some of its own weight in flight. The closures would have to be strengthened if you were to put any appreciable weight in it.
The shape I like is the shape of the Airstream trailers. I’ve talked to owners and they tell me the Airstream tows a lot better than the normal square jobs. Possibly a pod with a teardrop shape... big end forward would be optimal. Something like half an aerodynamic strut. Just make sure no air can pass between the fuselage and the Pod or it may drag you down.
Motorcycle manufacturers have been for years making removable luggage for their bikes. That is the sort of quick attach thinking I’d like to see for planes. Less than a minute to install and can be carried directly into one of those campgrounds with a number on the door. J
One of my friends told me that he liked the Full-Lotus floats because he could put his fishing rod in the main tube from the front and it would stay there... no break down required. I liked the idea so I mounted a piece of 2.5” black PVC tube to the pilot side float strut on my plane . It holds a fly rod and a spinning rod... looks ok too, sort of like a step to get into the plane. One of these years I may get around to painting it to match the struts. Air pressure from the slipstream keeps the rods in... no clips or anything! I do make a habit of checking my reels are secure before putting the rods in my holder. It sure makes wetting a line a lot faster... it also makes getting airborne faster.
